Colombo: City Street Food Tour by Tuk Tuk

8. Colombo: City Street Food Tour by Tuk Tuk

This Colombo tour takes you around the best spots of the city with a focus on foodie destinations. Enjoy 360-degree views of the city, visits to famous monuments, and the opportunity to try new flavors along the way. After pickup from your hotel in Colombo, take off on a convertible tuk tuk (three-wheeler), each holding up to two passengers. The tuk tuks are very comfortable and have many facilities including onboard coolers, high-end sound systems, and 2-way radios. The three-wheelers also have wet weather covers, and umbrellas are provided for bad weather conditions. Once settled into your tuk tuk, travel to the giant local produce market in Pettah and experience the noise, smells, and sounds of this place, where thousands buy the best vegetables to take home. Go for a walk along Galle Face Green afterwards, then savor egg hoppers, normal hoppers, tempered kadala (chickpeas), prawn vade (shrimp balls), and parippu vade (lentil fritters) in the street food stalls that line the Green. As an added perk, enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available on the tuk tuk. As you explore, get the prime opportunity to luxuriate your taste buds with cheap, delicious food sold by street sellers as well as expensive, equally delicious food from boutique restaurants. If you are a foodie, then this will provide the ultimate food experience. At the end of the tour, get dropped off if you are going right back to your hotel. If you choose to have further fun and continue the evening, your chauffeur will be able to provide you with information on the best places to do so. Negombo: Galle Day Tour with Stilt Fishing

9. Negombo: Galle Day Tour with Stilt Fishing

Your tour will begin early in the morning at 7:00AM, as your friendly driver picks you up from your Negombo hotel. From here you will depart for your destination of Galle. Once having arrived, you will begin with a tour of Galle Fort in Sri Lanka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Galle Fort (or Dutch Fort as it is also known), is a fortification first built by the Portuguese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. The initial fortifications (which were built in the late 16th century), were quite basic, but the fort underwent extensive modifications in the 17th century by the Dutch. Following the Galle Fort, you will proceed to lunch. Following your lunch break, you will reconvene your journey to the fishing village of Ahangama for a 1-hour stilt fishing experience. Stilt fishing is an old Sri Lankan way of catching fish, but is today more of a performance for the island's visitors than a part of the fishing industry. At the conclusion of your tour, you will be transferred back to your Negombo Hotel.

Colombo: Eat, Eat, Repeat Small Group Tour with a Local

10. Colombo: Eat, Eat, Repeat Small Group Tour with a Local

Your Colombo food tour will start in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station. The station is the center of Sri Lanka’s railway network and hasn’t changed much since it first opened in 1908.                      From there, wander past the busy markets finishing up at the end of the day, and down a street that’s full of little shops and vendors selling everything from saris to leather bags to fake Tag watches. Then, it’s time for your first food stop. Visit a popular local eatery, where you’ll get to sample some traditional cuisine, including hoppers, egg hoppers, and other local savoury snacks. Then, it’s back to walking (so we can burn off that food and make room for more). Moving on, your Colombo tour will take you to the famous Red Mosque, which is a revered place for Colombo’s Muslim community. From there, it’s back to the treats. Colombo’s main street is home to the famous Bombay Sweet House, known for its faloodaand saruwath drinks as well as its sweets. Further down the street you’ll stumble across some achcharu (pickle) carts with different kinds of pickles. The Sri Lankan pickle is typically very spicy — are you adventurous enough to try it out? See several shops selling varieties of what the locals call murukku. These are crunchy, flavoured, fried bits of flour or chick peas. Of course, stop at one of these shops to try some of these treats for yourself. As you keep moving, pass by the Khan clock tower (all road distances in Colombo are measured from this tower), the harbour, and the old colonial buildings such as the Grand Oriental Hotel and the Cargills building. Stop at the Old Colombo Dutch Hospital, which is considered to be the oldest building in the Colombo fort area. It’s now a renovated complex and hosts some 5-star restaurants, fancy shops, and some decent bars and pubs. Those who want can stop for a quick beer or drink here. Continue your Colombo food walk toward the Galle Face Green, passing many street food shops and stopping to sample local snacks such as prawn and crab wade along the way. Your final stop will be the famous Nana’s kothu shop, where you can have dinner and experience the Sri Lankan kothu (a Sri Lankan roti of vegetables or meat and spices). The Galle Face Green is where locals come to relax after a busy day, and you’re likely to see families and couples playing, flying kites, or just enjoying the cool evening breeze. Your Colombo tour will finish here, but you’re free to spend more time at the Green or wander on to the many pubs or clubs that are easily accessible from here.

What people are saying about Western Province, Sri Lanka

This is honestly on of the best city tours I have experienced. Due to COVID we were the only ones in the bus which made it a much more enjoyable experience as we really got to set the pace of the tour. Kurama was an excellent tour guide having in depth knowledge of the countries history and that of the locales we visited. The museum, independence square and the temple are just a few of the several places we got to visit. All in all a perfect outing except for the torrential downpour at the very end, but that is to be expected in Sri Lanka. Highly recommend this tour and be sure to ask for Kurama.

Very good introduction to Colombo. Guide was flexible and tailored the tour to our interests. Highly recommended for the beginning of your visit to the city.

We had a great tour around Colombo with Prassad! He took us to some places that I'm sure we had missed them without him! Thanks!!;)

Very well designed tour with a dedicated and knowledgeable guide

In particular, responding to individual customer requests rounded off the high level of overall satisfaction

Great tour. Really helps to understand the culture of Sri Lanka
