The 7 best sightseeing spots in Avila
Known as 'The Town of Stones and Saints', Avila boasts more churches and cathedrals per square mile than anywhere else in Spain--that's no easy feat! Visit the many attractions of Avila by foot to take in the town's buzzing atmosphere. Here's where to start...
1. Avila Cathedral
Start your tour of Avila with a visit to its primary tourism location, Avila Cathedral. It's a must-see -- the beautiful interior is breathtaking, and the cathedral is free to enter.
2. San Vicente
This extraordinary Roman Catholic basilica is one of the best things to see in Avila thanks to the arched wall that wraps around the facade. Located just off the Avenue de Madrid.
3. Convento de Santa Teresa
Ready for another sacred destination? This convent is the site of pilgrimages to Avila and is the best place to learn about the life of Saint Teresa, who was born at this site.
4. The Walls of Avila
The ancient walls that surround and protect the city are its most famous historical feature. Walk around the walls for excellent sightseeing and photo opportunities.
5. The Four Posts
This was once where visitors and pilgrims to Avila blessed themselves before entering the city sin-free. Now it's mostly used for photo opportunities, and is worth the short walk.
6. Plaza Mayor
This sunny square is the perfect place to grab a coffee among locals and people-watch. Venture off the square for the best restaurants in the city.
7. Barrio Judio (Jewish Quarter)
This pretty, character-filled old part of town is perfect for an afternoon out of the sun by meandering through the shady streets. Join a walking tour to learn about the area's history.

Where to eat
There are plenty of restaurants in Avila, covering everything from cheap eats to Michelin stars. Most are located within a mile radius of the cathedral, in the center of town, and on the main streets east and west of the Plaza Mayor.
When to visit
The weather in Avila is typical of Spain, and enjoys a long hot summer. Try spring or early fall if you prefer cooler weather, but the city never gets unbearably busy, either way.

What people are saying about Ávila
Both locations are well worth visiting. The bus was comfortable and we got to see quite a lot. Sylvia was the guide and she was really friendly and knowledgeable and was really easy to understand. Her English was perfect and she catered for both Spanish and English speaking guests. The group was quite a bit older and slower then I would have liked so I think we could have done more but we still managed to see enough. Really lovely tour.
Excellent - organisation was clear at the office we met in. The coach was clean and comfortable. Our guide Beatrice was really clear with her English and had a lovely calm tone. The tours were well organised and covered all the main points and places .Avila being so high in the mountains was extremely cold .We didn’t opt for lunch included as we preferred to spend that time at our leisure or they wasn’t a lot of free time .
We very much enjoyed our trip to Ávila and Segovia yesterday. The guide was very very knowledgeable and could answer all questions. We were disappointed that the guide had both Spanish and English guests that she had to interpret for. As guests it made the tour less personal as it was a bilingual tour. We do understand that this is not high season and therefore the need for a bilingual tour.
Worth noting the tour is conducted in both Spanish and English... so lots of standing around while the guide repeats the same information in another language. Normally wouldn’t be a problem, but given how cold it was on the tour, it would have been better to move faster with the walking tour and maybe consider conducting separate tours for English and Spanish in future.
The tour is perfect! The bus is comfortable, the tour guide speaks several languages and her English was perfect. The lunch was fabulous and super yummy. The amount of time given to tour each town was just right and we were able to fit some tourist shopping in too.
