We signed up for a tour that could include up to 20 people, and were pleasantly surprised when it was just the two of us with a guide. She was obviously very knowledgable about the artwork within the museums, and directed us to some of the most important pieces. We spent quite a bit of time outside the museums getting an orientation of sorts, especially regarding the Sistine Chapel since she would not be able to talk to us in there. In retrospect, we would have preferred to have spent that time actually in the museums. And this is no reflection on the guide -- but I'll say that the museums were much more crowded at night than various blogs had indicated they might be. The Sistine Chapel was especially crowded and loud, which was disappointing. Still, we were glad to have chosen a guide for the experience.

It is a journey of discovery through the history that led to the birth and creation of the Vatican state and consequently to the structuring of the museum, known as the "museums", and the succession of the different popes who contributed and validated the journey with the various vicissitudes. The merit of these historical discoveries belongs to the guide Marco Bonifazzi who acted as guide and accompanied us for the truly interesting and engaging visit with explanations and anecdotes that help the user to understand the logical / historical links between the different events. A top-notch, enthralling explanation.
