With its fairy tale characters, dances and melodies that immediately imprint themselves on the memory, The Nutcracker has been capturing young hearts and minds all over the world for generations. In the centre of Tchaikovsky’s ballet is Clara. She is given a nutcracker for Christmas from her godfather Drosselmeyer. When she falls asleep, she dreams that the nutcracker is head of a gingerbread army fighting against the minions of the Mouse King. With Clara’s help, the nutcracker wins the battles, turns into a prince and takes her to the Land of Sweets where he tells its ruler, the Sugar Plum Fairy, how Clara helped him to defeat his enemy. In the end, Clara wakes up. The simplicity of The Nutcracker is exactly what makes it so appealing; an ideal choice for the Salzburg Marionette Theatre to bring to its stage. Seemingly drawn straight out of a child’s toy box, and without a complex plot to worry about, one is left to marvel at the ethereal qualities of Tchaikovsky’s music and the delightful dances that each group of puppets takes turns to perform. The Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season.

What people are saying about Upper Austria

The tour was amazing. We booked from the states. The meeting place was incorrect, as well as the name of the company. Very frustrating to try to find the correct meeting point. Had to use international phone numbers to clear up the issue. It was a difference between Salzburg siteseeing and Panoramic site seeing. It was not the fault of Panoramic, but the communication with Get your Guide and Salzburg siteseeing. The tour itself was great! Peter was a great tour guide. Bus was comfortable.

Of all our activities this was our favorite. We went to 3 concerts, this is the only one with Opera in costume. It was fun, witty and well done. I highly recommend it. Each had their charm but this was special and very different. The food was good, the setting was lovely, the players wonderful.

Enjoyed looking around the castle before dinner. Dinner itself was fine- as expected but nothing special. Nice wine and beer! Music was fantastic, with lots of extra tunes at the end. Our favourite was the the violin concert part by JS Bach.

David and Ferdinand were informative, outstanding and funny! We really enjoyed the tour! Thinking of bringing my parents next time. Keep it up! Job well done!

So much fun for those of us who really love the movie. Great group on the bus too. Guide was too cute
