Full description

Mush your own husky team on this unique dog sledding evening tour through snowy terrain, surrounded by incredible mountain landscapes and scenic fjords.

If you're lucky, you might have the magical Northern Lights dancing on top of you. You do not need any previous skills to mush your own husky team. All you need is reasonable physical health and an eagerness to try something new. Join an authentic experience at the wilderness center Camp Tamok, a 90-minute scenic bus drive away from the city center of Tromsø. Upon arrival at the camp, get dressed in warm winter clothes and the other required gear for your dogsledding activity.

Your guides will then give thorough safety instructions and a practical demonstration on how to steer your own sled. Once you are ready, you will embark on your journey: two people will share each sled and a dog team.

One is the "musher" (driver) and the other can sit back and enjoy the ride. (If your group includes children, each child must be accompanied by an adult.) You will get the chance to switch places midway during the 10 to 12 kilometer dog sledding trail. Depending on snow conditions, you will spend up to 1 hour and 30 minutes completing it.

Even though this tour is not focused on hunting the Northern Lights, being outside on a dark winter evening might give a wonderful opportunity to witness the lights. After the tour, you will be served a hot meal in a traditional Northern Norwegian setting around the open fire in a reindeer herder's tent. After relaxing and warming up, board the bus back to the city and reflect on a memorable adventure.

The bus ride from Tromsö to Camp Tamok went well, where we were provided with warm snow suits, boots and, if necessary, hats and gloves. We were explained how to operate the sleds and we had more than enough time to look at the dogs. What was less nice was that we stood around for over an hour until the sleigh ride started. The journey also lasted just under an hour (according to the description 1.5 hours), which was a reduction of 1/3 of the journey time. At a price of just under €200.00, I don't think that's okay. After the sleigh ride we were able to warm up in a yurt with hot tea and there was a very, very tasty fish stew made from three kinds of local fish. The staff were all very friendly. The tour lasted a total of 7 hours until we were back in Tromsö.

It was amazing. My group was lucky to have a great, friendly and caring instructor. He owns and trained all those dogs and I can tell he really loves his job. He gave us a break in the middle of our journey to take pictures of his dogs etc. Forget to take down his name but instead I remember two of his dogs “Brian” and “Naila”!! Not a single regret attending this event!

It was just amazing. The dogs are so friendly and cuddly, and just want to play. Pick up and drive up to the camp was smooth, all information needed given well in advance. The thermal clothing and boots kept you warm and cozy. The actual sledding was a great adventure and when it's said you should be fit, it means it. Some running along with the dogs and pushing the sleight up the hills is required. Hot drinks and food served in the camp tents with beaming fire in the stove and staff answering loads of questions and keeping you entertained with little stories. It was super.
