  • Etna Nature and Flavors: 6-Hour Tour from Taormina

    1. Etna Nature and Flavors: 6-Hour Tour from Taormina

Visit the tallest volcano in Europe and explore Etna Park on a 6-hour tour from Taormina. The first stop of the day is in the town of Zafferana, known as the town of honey, located on the eastern side of Etna. Visit one of the area’s top organic farms to taste products such as honey, olive oil and wine. Later, put on a helmet and headlamp and head inside a lava cave to learn how lava flows are formed. At the Sapienza Refuge, see both the newest eruptions of the volcano and the old Silvestri craters dating from the 1892 eruption. Trek along a nature path enjoying breathtaking views, before the drive back to Taormina.

Great tour to see Mount Etna! Our tour guide Andreas was great and very insightful, he answered all our questions and told us many things along the way. Definitely bring something warm to wear. We went mid August and it was about 17 degrees and windy, a lot of people had to buy sweaters in the end, especially if you plan on taking the funicular higher up. The tour of the bee farm was also nice but definitely not the highlight of the trip.

Just south of Taormina is the nature reserve of Isola Bella, and further south you’ll see the popular seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Visit the village of Taormina, a 45-minute drive from Mount Etna. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, the village features an ancient Greek theater, many old churches, antique shops, lively bars and fine restaurants.

We were picked up at 10.30am by Roberto, our tour guide. As we sped along in his battered Ford he explained about the lava, it's use in building and architecture,it's fertile minerals, the importance of the sun,the wind, the rain and the old ways of making wine. We started with a small producer, meeting up with two other couples and their guides. We sampled a white, a rose and two reds, all generously poured, the perfumed white proved to be our favourite of the day. Next we went to a slightly bigger outfit where we sat down at tables and were given a light meal of foccacia, sun-dried tomatoes, aubergine pickled with celery, olives marinated with fennel, small slices of salami and cubes of cheese. Still only the three couples, we sampled a white, a rose, two reds and a red dessert wine. Lastly we went to the Gambino estate, the panoramic view was simply stunning.Pleasantly full and slightly stupified we relaxed in the back of the Ford instead worrying about the cracked windscreen!

Amazing experience, knowing a place full of history and emotion! Our guide Luigi was amazing, detailing every event that took place. Don't forget to bring a coat, because even in the summer it's cold up there!!! Our guide Luigi was wonderful, friend and has immense knowledge that we thank him for sharing with us.

If the view is reasonable (you can check on monitors in front of the cable car ticket sales), you should invest additional money (currently € 67 pp) and drive up to the possible 2,750m, it's worth it! Make sure you have suitable shoes with you for the gorge!

We liked our guide Bruno immediately and provided us with lots of information about the region and the surrounding area throughout the day
