Walk along the Shakadang Trail, where the river gently flowing through the marble boulders as you meanders along the trail in parallel. The turquoise blue water of the river is crystal clear that you can see the riverbed from above. The next stop is Swallow Grotto. The potholes on the cliff surface were created by the ground water and the rapid stream of the river. In the past, they were the natural nesting location of swallows, hence the name. Walking through the tunnels, you will be amazed by the stunning views of the marble cliffs reaching up to the sky. Take a short break at Tianxiang, a large river terrace recreational area and enjoy lunch in a restaurant in the park. Next, head to the Tunnel of Nine Turns, considered to be the most scenic section of Taroko Gorge. As you walk along the trail, you can see the meandering river running through the deep and spectacular canyon from above, and you can also have a closer look at the faults and folds of the sheer marble cliffs, as well as the vegetation on the walls. Visit the Eternal Spring Shrine, which commemorates the 225 military veterans who died during the construction of the Central Cross-Island Highway. Before you return to the train station for your train back to Taipei, your will visit a local marble factory, where you can get some handcrafts made of marble or souvenirs featuring the local characters, to enrich your travel collection. The time I travelled was during outbreak of Coronavirus. Even though there were only 2 persons left for the tour, the tour still operated. This is very impressive. Overall I like the scenary of Taroko very much. Even though we had 15 minutes at Shakadang trail, but we got enough time for other stops.

The tour is perfectly organised, you are picked up at the hotel on the dot, you get a sticker stuck on your clothing at the train station with the phone number of the organizer and the tour operator and if you do get lost, everyone knows where the tourist is must be submitted. Addressed in this way, you can enjoy the day in a relaxed manner: after a train ride of 2.5 to 3 hours you are at the starting point of the bus tour through a gorge that is really worth seeing, in addition to photo stops you have the opportunity for two small excursions, get a good Chinese lunch and finally a visit to a company that offers stone carvings ranging from jade jewelery to a large-scale culture of a Buddha made of polished colored marble (ok - that reminds you of the obligatory carpet shops in Istambul). A nice, but very long day overall.

I really enjoyed my day but I did not expect the journey involved. It was not a high speed train which we had in the morning and the train too 3 hours and coming back was faster but still 2.5 hours so a long day on trains. The gorge itself was fairly amazing and the lunch was really good. The guide we nice.
