Often considered to be Sweden's first city, to this day there are visible traces of the people who spent their lives here, with archaeological excavations dating back to the late 19th-century. Learn about the development of Viking culture, from the archaic to the medieval, by which time Birka was a hub of Christian missionary activities, before its eventual collapse and decay in 11th century. Nice trip and guide, shame the island is half closed

The boat trip was really nice and there was a lot of pretty scenery and other things to see and they were explained in an entertaining manner by the Englishspeaking guide. It would have been nice to know in advance you could actually order lunch to have on board. Also because once you get to the island at this time of year the restaurant is closed and the cafe does not serve any lunch, only sweet treats and pastries. Again the guide was brilliant and very entertaining in the tour of the island as well, and the museum was educational and fun, but the viking village was a bit dead, as in the huts were open to view, but there was not much to see. A shame when there is such a short season already, not to fully use it and have everything open and available when the island is open. We were lucky to have nice weather. I will go again but only in summer at high season time.

Great day out and learnt so much

Terrific day to Birka. The weather was very dark and windy but did not rain, in fact it set the mood for the visit - very atmospheric and appropriate, The guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable. We enjoyed traditional food! Local craft beer and had a sample of local yummy mead in the restaurant. I would highly recommend the outing :-)

Relaxing and informative day exploring Birka.

The boat ride was great with the guide pointing out areas along the way (command of English language was very good). The refreshments and facilities on the boat made this a comfortable 1.5 hour ride each way. The island had a restaurant, restrooms, museums, and houses. The walk is uphill and so is not for people with mobility issues. The tour was informative and the island beautiful and peaceful.
