Discover the Stockholm archipelago, just 45 minutes outside of Stockholm. The archipelago is formed of about 30,000 islands located in the calmness of the Baltic Sea. In the past, it was home to numerous farming and fishing shelters and was a Viking trading outpost. The surface of the water is overhung by domes made of rocks and trees creating a unique natural maze which is perfect to explore on a kayak.  Begin the tour, by meeting your guide at 9 AM in the South of Stockholm. Drive together to Dalarö, a charming little village, from where you'll embark on your kayak adventure. On the way, admire the magnificent little wooden red houses which have been discreetly built among the pines. Spend the entire day exploring different islands from the water. Stop on one of the deserted islands for a filling lunch cooked on an open fire. Take time here to rest, accompanied by the swell of the Baltic and the singing birds. At the end of the afternoon, paddle back towards Dalarö where you started from. Go around the other islands and get the opportunity to see other fantastic things on the more wild part of the archipelago. Keep your eyes peeled for circling sea eagles searching for prey. Try to spot numerous species of migratory birds including different types of goose or the famous great cormorant flying over the horizon heading north. At the end of the tour, return to Stockholm filled with memories and replenished by the fresh air.

Visit Sigtuna, the oldest surviving town in Sweden, full of cozy traditional wooden houses. Walk along the main street with your guide and see one of the smallest town halls in Sweden built before 1750. Explore the history of the town from the Viking age to the Middle Ages to today. Admire the oldest stone churches from the early medieval period from before 1100. After exploring Sigtuna, visit Wenngarn Castle dating back to the 17th century. It is rumored to have the best preserved Baroque chapel in Europe. Hear about the castle’s history and the history of one of Sweden’s mightiest men: Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. Stroll through the beautifully restored palace garden.  Finish the tour with a stop at Viby. The village, full of red cabins, looks like it did before the 1850s.

7. Half-Day Viking Culture Tour from Stockholm

You will start your 5-6 hour tour by being picked up at your centrally located hotel or by the Stockholm Central Station. From one of these locations the journey starts in a minivan taking you out into the Swedish countryside. The maximum group size of the tour is 16 persons. Have a nice time with the other members of your small group and enjoy the scenic ride togheter.  First stop at Broby bro, a Viking and Iron Age gravefield where people have been buried for more than 1000 years. Take a walk in the pagan gravefield with your Viking guide and uncover the Vikings burial traditions and mythology. Learn about how a person was buried. Also hear the story of Estrid - a Viking woman. In 1995 a skeleton was found in a Christian part of the gravefield, it was a 60-year old woman identified as Estrid. Get to know how the Stockholm County Museum were able to identify her and experience her life.  The next stop is Jarlabanki's causeway, a 11-th century Viking age bridge built by earl Jarlabanki. He was a cocky Viking who liked to show off his power. Take in the view of the 150-meter long causeway and learn about bridge-building and the development of roads and communication in that era. Head on to a Viking council, preserved on its original location for 1000 years. Get to understand the Viking culture, society and mentality through the guide's explantion at the council. Learn how the Vikings ruled their society. Venture further to the medieval Vallentuna church, dating back to the 12th century. It used to be the home of the Vallentuna Calendar, likely Sweden's oldest book. Have lunch after this stop before arriving in Sigtuna. Eat a tasty and fresh buffet of Swedish and international food for a typical Swedish lunch price (approx 10€).  The main attraction on this tour is Sigtuna (from the 1 January 2018, not included before this date). The little town of 8000 inhabitants is the oldest still existing town of Sweden and holds many historical gems both by the streets and inside the Sigtuna museum (you can visit the museum if you want to). Enjoy a guided walk in the town a have around 45 minutes of free time on your own. Catch nice views of the Sigtuna bay, the main streets 18th-century wooden houses and the 12-th century romantic church ruins. After Sigtuna, venture back to Stockholm and your hotel. Your guide can also drop you anywhere in Central Stockholm.

The castle also contains a wonderful collection of paintings, furniture, textiles, and tableware, as well as books and weapons. When the Skoloster is closed during October through May, a different castle will be visited instead.
