Anna picked me up from my hotel, I was the only one in attendance so it was a private tour. She drove me to Peterhof in her car, pointing out Stalinist architecture along the way and chatting to me about imperial and Soviet history. We toured both the palace interior and gardens, except it was winter, so we spent less time in the gardens. The ability to "skip the queue" was very helpful as we bypassed several large tour groups and it was cold outside. Anna was very knowledgeable and engaging when it came to touring the palace staterooms. I asked her for recommendations for Georgian cuisine, and she dropped me off at a restaurant close to the city centre on the way back. The tour was 4-5 hours in total, including travel time, and I think it would have taken me much longer had I decided to visit Peterhof by myself (and would have been less informative - audioguides are great, but a poor replacement for a real, live guide). Would recommend. Pro-tip: message the guide to confirm meeting
Really enjoyable day trip from St Petersburg. There were only three of us plus the guide on this trip, which made getting around so much easier than larger groups. The guide picks you up from your hotel, and private transport to the palace, about an hour away. Once inside the knowledge of our guide was great. Our only problems were larger groups holding us up as we walked around the palace. The gardens are as extensive with all the gravity fed fountains. A great insight into how Royalty lived, and how they were influenced by many other cultures around Europe.
A chance to walk to the three cathedrals and have other buildings of interest pointed out on the way. Our guide also told us where the points of interest we wanted to visit were located, which was really helpful. We learnt a lot about Russian history - hopefully after all the tours we've done we should remember at least some of it. Beware the people in animal suits at the meeting point, Alexander's column, in Palace Square - if they offer to take a selfie say 'no'! ~They don't tell you how much it will cost.
Great for solo travellers. Joined a small group which seems to be something really hard to organise in St Petersburg for lone travellers. Hotel pick up was great and the guide very knowegable. Olga navigated around the large tour groups and we saw all that Peterhof had to offer.
We learned a lot about Russian history from our guide and she navigated the crowds well so that we got a comprehensive experience at each site. She was a late arriving at our meeting point. Another tour guide kindly called the tour office to confirm she was still coming.
