Athens: Private Cape Sounio and Vouliagmeni Lake Sunset Tour

3. Athens: Private Cape Sounio and Vouliagmeni Lake Sunset Tour

Following collection from your Athens accommodation, pass through some of the city's most scenic suburbs whilst following a coastal road. Your first stop is to Lake Vouliagmeni, a hidden treasure of the Athenian Riviera. Lake Vouliagmeni has a steady temperature all year round, ranging between 18-24 degrees Celsius. Its water is brackish, containing underground sea water mixed with the water of a spring. This makes it an ideal location for swimmers who visit the lake to profit from its mineral-rich water. Following the lake, continue along the coastal road whilst admiring the green and rocky coastline of Attica on your way to Cape Sounion. As you approach the promontory, the columns of the Temple of Poseidon are visible from the road, standing proudly on top of a hill and dominating the surroundings. The temple was erected to honor the ancient Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon. On a lower hill, opposite Cape Sounion, you can discover the ruins of a second ancient temple that was built to honor Goddess Athena. Take your time in admiring the infinite blue of the Aegean Sea, as no land catches your eye except for scattered islands in the open sea. Admire the beautiful sunset colors in the sky from the highest point of the hill, following which you return to Athens following the same route.

This private tour drives along the lacy coastal road that begins in the Athenian suburb of Glyfada and winds its way through Vouliagmeni, Saronida and Lagonisi to reach Cape Sounio. It is one of the region of Attica’s most sublime routes. Small beaches tucked away with their sandy shores or rocky stretches, crystal-clear sparkling water and a perfectly blue sky will accompany you along the way and delight the senses, mind and soul of anyone taking this gorgeous route to get to one of Greece’s most idyllic spots, Cape Sounio. From a distance, your gaze will be captivated by the ruins of the temple of Poseidon, a commanding, stunning structure characteristic of classical architecture from the 5th century B.C. This is the spot that the ancient Athenians chose to honor their god Poseidon within a fortress constructed to protect their coastline. It was here that the Sanctuary of Athena was also built for the worship of their city-state's patron goddess. Centuries after its decline, which occurred during the Peloponnesian Wars, a foreigner who loved Greece, a philhellene inspired by the splendor of the land and its history, the English poet Lord Byron was enchanted by this place and praised its virtues. Later, systematic excavations of the ruins would reveal Sounio in all its glory and grant it a second chance to shine.

8. From Athens: Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Private Trip

Cape Sounion is one of the most popular destinations in Athens, but it's not easy to visit due to its distance from main roads. With this private excursion, you'll be able to explore Athens without getting lost or waiting at long lines. Your Personal Guide and Driver will take care of all your requests while they deliver you to the top of the mountain as well as the next stop on your itinerary. The temple of Poseidon is a magnificent sight to see. It was built around the 6th century BC, and it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The temple has been used as a church since 1884, but it still contains some original structural pieces from the temple’s construction. You will walk to the top of Cape Sounion and then to Poseidon’s Temple. Take a stroll up the mountain until you reach the ruins of Poseidon’s Temple. The temple is a beautiful structure with white marble columns and arches, which make it look like an ancient Greek ruin. Once you get up close, you can see the beautiful carvings that were made on the walls. Poseidon’s Temple is one of the most popular tourist places in all of Greece, so it’s always full of people and families. If you want to get a good view into the temple, you can climb up one of its many pillars or ascend by way of an imposing stairway in the back. The Temple of Poseidon was first built in the 6th century BC and was renovated in the 5th century AD, so you can see a mix of Greek, Roman and Byzantine architecture. The temple sits on a rock formation that is approximately 80 meters high and faces westwards towards Cape Sunion. The temple measures about 60 meters by 36 meters and is built from roughly cut limestone blocks. The temple was never actually completed and is rather small compared to other Greek temples. It has a peristyle, colonnade and sanctuary that makes it seem like a more Roman style temple. The columns within the sanctuary are Doric style and made from the local limestone of the island (called "jelab"). The end of your journey, the view of the Aegean Sea and an eternal present awaits you at this majestic place. The wealth of history will make you leave with a deeper understanding of ancient Greece and its religion, philosophy and mythology. Once the tour is over, you'll be driven back to your hotel in Athens.

Very nice excursion! Listening guide who answers all your questions and guides you on other possible visits to do during your trip (accompanied or solo!). I found the goat very interesting and the place absolutely splendid, go to Cape Sounion it's worth it! And the temple is quite well preserved considering the place in which it is located. I highly recommend this experience to you. Only downside, the lack of information about the meeting place. I admit that until the last moment I was afraid he forgot me haha!
