The Arade River has forever been of great importance in connecting Silves (the Islamic capital of the Algarve between the 8th and 13th centuries) to the sea. For centuries, the Arade was the scenery of important merchant trades, and was sailed by many cultures including the Phoenicians, Romans, Vikings, and Moors, among others. Ships came to carry minerals, oranges, cork, wood, figs, almonds, carobs, fish, salt, among other various riches of this region.

The boat tour was great fun. With the solar boat, the trip was leisurely and the boatman told a lot about the country and its people. One also got into conversation with the other participants of the tour, who came from Portugal and England. The stay in Sagres was also very nice. The city is worth seeing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the solar powered boat, it was a very relaxing trip along the river with no engine noise or pollution. Well done to Sunboat!! Our skipper was very welcoming and we enjoyed hearing about the local area and it's history. Silves is a delightful town and well worth a visit.
