Siena: Half-day Guided Hike to Monteriggioni

1. Siena: Half-day Guided Hike to Monteriggioni

Give your mind a rest from the noise of the crowded towns, follow your expert guide on a pleasant walk along the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrim route first plotted by the Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury on his return from Rome in the 9th century. The route was considered the main artery to Rome throughout the Middle Ages and is still a popular trail today. Once a highway of men and emotions, a spiritual pilgrimage as well as wealthy trade route, the via Francigena had been forgotten and almost entirely relegated to history by modern roads and only recently brought back to the grip of modernity, enjoyed by many modern pilgrims and hikers alike. Experience the beauty of the mixture between the Tuscan countryside and the glory of its medieval past, still present in the wonderfully preserved castles, villages and ruins along the route.   Pass through forests and fields, vineyards and olive groves from Siena to the imposing fortress of Monteriggioni, a medieval fortress built by the Sienese in the thirteenth century as a bastion of defense in their wars against Florence, today a fortified but quaint village with many shops of local crafts and products.   Once in Monteriggioni, enjoy a guided tasting of local wines before saying goodbye to your guide. You can then remain to explore the village and the surrounding area further at your own pace or return to Siena right away, as you are given bus tickets to return to Siena in your own time (several return buses available throughout the afternoon).

Siena: Country Trek with Olive Oil Tasting and Farm Lunch

2. Siena: Country Trek with Olive Oil Tasting and Farm Lunch

Visit the bucolic Tuscan countryside of Siena, cross sleepy stone villages, admire medieval towers jutting out from the landscape and hike along the ancient pilgrim route of the Via Francigena or the old "way to Rome" of medieval Europe. Immerse yourself in Mediterranean forest, cross neatly tended olive groves and sleepy villages with cobbled streets and stone houses. Interact with your eloquent guide that accompanies you and illustrates the history traditions, flora and fauna of Tuscany. Arrive to a panoramic spot for a small picnic and tasting of Tuscany's olive oil. Learn to recognize the famous "green gold" and understand how it is made and what flavors to look out for. After our tasting we continue on footpaths through idyllic landscapes dotted with historical sights and plenty of photo opportunities and arrive to your lunch venue after approximately 4 hours and 12km of hiking. Enjoy a well earned outdoor lunch experience at a farm and pilgrim stop along the Francigena route. Savor traditional fresh and seasonal lunch accompanied by tasting of the local wines. The hike is a loop of about 10km and starts and ends at the same location, transportation to and from the venue can be requested as an extra. The hike is on easy country footpaths and roads that do not require a specific level of physical preparation.

If you want to immerse yourself in a naturalistic itinerary of high cultural depth as well, here you are satisfied with the fabulous itinerary of the village of Monteriggioni, one of the most beautiful and special places in Italy. Yesterday’s hike from Siena to Monteriggione was spectacular. More than I expected. Keko was an incredibly excellent guide. He was kind, helpful and very fun. He shared the complete history of the Via Francigena, which I found very interesting! He then as the hike continued, imparted his knowledge of the plants along the way, taking his time to show us, have us smell, taste and experience the land. He is of the area and also made us feel at home greeting the neighbors with grace and aloha. He left us in the quaint and historic village of Monteriggione in hands of Stefano and darling Margarita to taste wines paired with local cheeses and fresh olive oil. Stellar 5 star tour! I would do it again tomorrow if it were availabile. Obviously I highly recommend this tour. Aloha, Susi

A wonderful tour! We had a lot of fun and joy with our guide Kiko. Kiko went to great lengths to bring the country and the people closer to us. It was very exciting to learn things from the past and from the present time. Wild herbs along our hike on the pilgrimage route and anecdotes from the past made the hike very entertaining. The path was very pleasant to walk. In Monteriggioni we had a very nice wine tasting. We really liked the wine, so we even ordered delivery to our home. Afterwards we had a very good meal in the nice little place. We would have loved to have stayed there. I highly recommend this tour! Thank you dear Kiko!

Great 3 hour morning hike with personable and naturalist oriented guide. Lovely lovely scenery. We would have preferred a bit more background on the Via Francigena. Winery to end with was great - we bought the winery’s artisan cheese to go along with the bread and Chianti. Overall, an excellent experience and great value!

Leisurely walk to the small fortified town of Monteriggioni imcluded information on local plants and a wine tasting at the end. Back in Siena by late afternoon on local bus.

Best ever tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable, passionate and very interesting. Nest year i will take his tour again!
