Full description
Located around 18 kilometres (10 miles) from Siem Reap, Kompheim is a small rural village made up of farmers and itinerant workers. Our Day in a Life experience aims to work mostly with these families. On every tour a host family looks after the group. This host family will welcome you into their home and life for the day. The host family receives a small payment for their involvement, and a larger contribution is made to a village fund used for special village projects such as water filters and water wells. Activities on the full-day tour may include planting rice, and harvesting or transplanting rice depending on the season. Other activities include weaving thatch for roof repairs, weaving wall panels, planting vegetable crops, planting trees, and making prahoc or rice wine. Each tour is different, and activities will depend on the time of year, family needs, and what’s occurring in the village. Learn about life in a typical village, and visit the local temple and school if possible. Learn about village customs and culture, and gain new insights into traditional rural Cambodia. A picnic lunch is provided as part of your tour and a traditional Khmer dish is provided for the host family. You’ll eat lunch with the host family, but please note that due to lack of electricity and proper sanitation we cannot source food from the village. We prepare all meals in town and provide them for the tour. This program is part of the Beyond Responsible Tourism Initiative. Your participation directly helps poor Cambodian families. It is extremely important that you do not hand out gifts, candy, or money to the families or the children, no matter how dire the situation seems. Providing gifts can cause problems within the village and jealousy among families and relatives. Should you wish to help, please talk to our team. You will notice that many children suffer poor dental hygiene. Please do not buy or hand out candy, as this only contributes to the problem.

Very informative and top-quality experience and an excellent guide.

It was a very educational hands-on experience in how much of the third world lives. We returned from the trip very dirty, sweaty and tired, but we were absolutely delighted that we had taken this opportunity to get "immersed" in the local life and culture. Our guide was very informative and fluent in English, and explained details of Cambodian life that would be difficult to comprehend without a knowledgeable local guide. Following our outing, all in our group were eager to make a contribution to HUSK, to allow for some small measure of material upgrades to the villagers that were so welcoming to us.

Must do activity to learn about life of Cambodian people

We had a great day doing some activities in a Cambodian life. We began with an oxcart ride, lovingly called the "Cambodian Lexus", then spent time harvesting rice with a sicle, a back breaking job in the hot sun that makes you appreciate your job. We then planted trees and had a cooked lunch at family home--food came from restaurant and family learned how to hygenically prepare the food. We had fish cakes, chicken curry and fruit for dessert. Finally we toured the headquarters of Husk and school Husk runs for the local children. Money from this activity goes back to the local people--a win-win situation--you learn about the daily life of Cambodians and help them at the same time.
