Silfra: Snorkeling Between Tectonic Plates, Meet on Location

1. Silfra: Snorkeling Between Tectonic Plates, Meet on Location

Enjoy a snorkeling tour of the Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the wonders of the famous Golden Circle route. Float between two tectonic plates in the clearest water in the world with 300 feet, or 100 meters, of visibility. Once you arrive at Silfra, you will be divided into groups of 6 people, one group per guide. Gear up in a wetsuit to keep you warm and comfortable in the cold water. After a safety briefing, make your way to the entry platform to spend about 45 minutes in the water. Float through what is called the Big Crack, Silfra’s narrowest section where the continental plates are so close you can almost touch them. The fissure then widens into Silfra Hall. If you look from the right angle, you can see all the way to lake Thingvallavatn, over 150 meters away.  Enter the Silfra Cathedral at the depth of 23 meters and feel like you’re flying over the boulders and glacial silt. End the snorkeling adventure at the Silfra Lagoon. Enjoy hot chocolate and cookies to warm up. Chat with your guide and ask any questions you might have.

It was great! It was a cloudy - and I mean we were in the clouds - kind of day, and I was worried visibility would be terrible, but it was crystal clear and colorful - beautiful! The water was freezing, but the dry suits worked great; with two layers of wool from head to toe, I was happy the whole time. Also, hint for when you get dressed: if the stirrups to the liner they give you are wet, don't put then around your feet. It worked for me to keep my feet both dry and warm.

First off waiting in line for 3 hours was brutal there has to be a more efficient way of getting people in. Plus they let so many people in that it is overcrowded and overwhelming and extremely unenjoyable. They need to sell less tickets for the day or have specific time slots for people to enter.

I have never been so cold in my life, but it was totally worth it. The views down into the tunnels and the cathedral were breathtaking.

Make sure you get there early as the lines get long fast, we go there at 8:20am and we still waited 2 hours to get in.

Luce was an amazing guide and the whole experience was everything we hoped for and more!
