Full description

Enjoy a 2-hour cultural and historical tour of Bonaventure, a more than 200-acre land which one can freely wander but better explore with an exceptional guide at the helm.

On this tour with Shannon Scott or one of his incredible guides, you will come to see the important aspects of the cemetery and understand Bonaventure’s many layers, from the 18th-century plantation era, and the Victorian cemetery, to all of the art and traditions of the place.

Stroll around the live oak avenues of the Cotton Boom yesteryear and hear about the people that made all of those buildings and squares in town so infamous and colorful.

Some of the characters, such as "Crooner of 1500 Songs" Johnny Mercer and writer Conrad Aiken, are world-renowned, while others you will come to love were famous only in their hometown Savannah. Other characters consist of photographers, painters, scientists, soldiers, industrialists, and duelists.

Bonaventure is characterized by great sculpture and here you will see the works of some of the greatest artists of their period.

The cemetery is a visual playground of symbols pertaining to everything from the Masonic Lodge mentioned in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code to the Bible, Ancient Egypt, and everything symbolizing the religious, fraternal, and eternal.

From angels to cherubs to lifelike figures of the people buried there, you'll get to see them all.

Meeting point

When arriving at 330 Bonaventure Rd, look for the pillared entrance with 2 goddess statues. As you drive through, follow to the right, which puts the red brick office building on your right. Exactly 50 feet (15 meters) up to your left is your first paved road (Mullryne Way). Take that left, following Mullryne Way as it snakes all the way down to the lower river bluff, and where it ends you'll observe a gravel parking lot on your right. Parking is free, so park there. Your additional landmarks will be a bridge in the distance and a marina. There is a single picnic table on the far side of the parking lot going towards the marina. Your guide will meet you in the general area of the table.

Very enjoyable and informative tour. Bonaventure Cemetery is beautiful. Our guide, Rich guided us through the cemetery sharing lots of interesting history about the inhabitants, as well as local lore. Rich’s knowledge of design element and features of various tombstones and other statues and structures was really interesting and informative. We highly recommend this tour.

Our guide was Pascal and he was wonderful. He was able to answer all our questions which was quite impressive as we are French and history-buffs. We really appreciated the fact that there was a break half way through the tour when Pascal provided us with cold water. We highly recommend this tour.

This tour involves a wonderful walk through one of the most beautiful gardens around savanna, the Bonaventure cemetery. The delightful grounds created a perfect backdrop for the stories throughout history that our guide wove for the duration. Bringing water and bug spray is highly recommended. We enjoyed this tour and had a wonderful time.
