Full description
Enjoy a 2-hour cultural and historical tour of Bonaventure, a more than 200-acre land which one can freely wander but better explore with an exceptional guide at the helm. On this tour with Shannon Scott or one of his incredible guides, you will come to see the important aspects of the cemetery and understand Bonaventure’s many layers, from the 18th century plantation era, the Victorian cemetery, to all of the art and traditions of the place. You will stroll around the live oak avenues of the Cotton Boom yesteryear and hear about the people that made all of those buildings and squares in town so infamous and colorful. Some of the characters, such as "Crooner of 1500 Songs" Johnny Mercer and writer Conrad Aiken, are world renowned, while others you will come to love were famous only in their hometown Savannah. Other characters consist of photographers, painters, scientists, soldiers, industrialists, and duelists! Bonaventure is characterized by great sculpture and here you will see the works of some of the greatest artists of their period. The cemetery is one visual playground of symbols pertaining to everything from the Masonic Lodge mentioned in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code to the Bible, Ancient Egypt, and everything symbolizing the religious, fraternal and eternal. From angels to cherubs to lifelike figures of the people buried there, you'll get to see them all!

Meeting point

When arriving at 330 Bonaventure Rd, look for the pillared entrance with 2 goddess statues. As you drive through, follow to the right, which puts the red brick office building on your right. Exactly 50 feet (15 meters) up to your left is your first paved road (Mullryne Way). Take that left, following Mullryne Way as it snakes all the way down to the lower river bluff, and where it ends you'll observe a gravel parking lot on your right. Parking is free, so park there. Your additional landmarks will be a bridge in the distance and a marina. There is a single picnic table on the far side of the parking lot going towards the marina. Your guide will meet you in the general area of the table.

Guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, however we had a group on our tour that was not fit enough to handle the heat or the walk and that really slowed us down and made the tour not as enjoyable for the rest of us. Perhaps there could be a shortened and/or handicapped tour for special needs individuals.

Detailed, Passionate and Fun

We enjoyed our tour and how detailed Shannon was. The amount of knowledge he has, the passion and the twist of humor was just what we were looking for. He allowed our husky Luna to join us on the tour, which was also very important to us. We will definitely share with friends to visit him and can't wait to come back for a night tour in the future.

Lots of history and local color

Shannon gives an amazing tour of the cemetery. Luckily, but by sheer accident, we signed up for his tour and not some of the others. I don't think we would have gotten nearly as much of the history and the local color from someone else. We were there with our granddaughter aged 13 and 10 and they enjoyed it as much as we did. We all highly recommend Shannon's tour!
