7 Places To Visit in San Juan
The Puerto Rican capital has a lot to offer. Since it's the oldest city under US rule, you can get your historical and cultural fix, all while enjoying the natural benefits of its Caribbean location. What shouldn't you miss on a trip to San Juan?
1. Castillo San Felipe del Morro
This UNESCO-listed fort is really impressive. Explore its 16th-century latrines, enjoy the views out onto the Atlantic, and learn how it has been used for military purposes.
2. Bacardi Rum Factory
The welcome drink isn't the only delight on this tour around the original Bacardi distillery. Discover some history, learn a little mixology, and take home some great souvenirs!
3. Old San Juan
You may need to pinch yourself as you wander the streets of San Juan's old town, reminiscent of France or Spain. Visit the Paseo de la Princesa for that maximum European flavor.
4. Castillo San Cristobal
Constructed by the Spanish, this fort has been protecting San Juan for over 300 years. Go down into tunnels and take in the views at sunset.
5. El Yunque
A reasonable drive away from the city, El Yunque is your chance to traverse a real rainforest. Go on a hike, hire a car, and experience nature like you've always wanted to.
6. La Cueva del Indio
These caves contain petroglyphs carved by the indigenous Taino people, dating way back before Columbian times. An experienced guide will tell you about the context of the carvings.
7. Arecibo Observatory
This giant radio telescope is property of the National Science Foundation and tracks unidentified objects in space. If you want to believe, this is definitely worth a visit!
Planning Your Visit
When should I go?
Puerto Rico is beautiful at all times of the year, but be aware that summer can be wet and hurricane season ranges from June to November.
How long should I stay?
About a week should suffice for all the main points of interest, but if you're particularly interested in the region, you could stay a little longer and combine it with a visit to the Lesser Antilles - there's British and French colonial heritage there.
Do I need a passport to visit Puerto Rico?
Since it is a US unincorporated territory, US citizens do not need a passport to travel there - other ID used for domestic flights is enough. However, if you are a citizen of another nation, you should check the individual entry and visa requirements.

What people are saying about San Juan
Awesome experience. We had so much fun and took lots of pics. Old San Juan was beautiful. The hike up to the waterfall was a tad bit harder than expected but it was so worth it. My 16yr old had a fall & scraped his arm, but our guide grabbed a first aid kit and patched him right up. The beach was beautiful and I even had time for some horseback riding. We never felt rushed at any stops. Definitely a must do excursion. Tip: Invest in some water hiking shoes with a good grip.
The bay was phenomenal. Our driver/tour guide was awesome. The fishing town's businesses were mostly closed. After dinner, there wasn't much to do until we boarded the boat. It was a long day for only being in the bay for approximately 30 minutes but also a once in a lifetime experience.
The guides were very informative and polite. We were struggling for awhile with balance so we were behind everyone a little the tour guide sat with us explain everything and gave good tips. Overall it was great. One of the best experiences we’ve has so far in our 4 days
What a beautiful experience! We made memories that will last forever. The crew was fantastic. Very knowledgeable about the Coral reef and islands. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we need. Loved it! See you next year!!!
The overall experience was great! If it rains prior to your trip make sure and pack THE RIGHT HIKING/GRIP SNEAKERS!!! Brain is an amazing tour guide and he wasn’t even our personal tour guide.
