Full description
Salerno is one of the most beautiful medieval cities. From Salerno, you will be able to easily reach the amazing Amalfi Coast or Paestum. You can't miss it during your tour in Italy. You will learn the history of this city. Between 197 and 194 B.C., Salerno was a Roman colony, under the name of Salernum, from Salum (sea) and Irnum (Irno Rivers which crosses the town). The town flourished thanks to Longobards. Under the prince Arechi I, Salerno became the capital of Longobardia Minore, thus becoming also an Episcopal seat. In 787, Arechi II moved the seat of Benevento Ducat to Salerno to flee away from the attacks led by Carlo Magno and to ensure the government of a strategic area. In this period the School of Medicine was founded. It is the most ancient medical institution of the Western world. You will visit the city's main monument - the cathedral (Duomo), a 12th century Romanesque building dedicated to the apostle, St. Matthew, who is the city's patron saint. His body and that of Pope Gregorio VII (who was banished in Salerno) are kept inside the church. You will also visit the most important areas of Langobardorum and learn about the Normans who dominated Salerno. Visit the Santa Sofia Complex, San Pietro Complex, Palazzo Fruscione, Largo Campo, the public garden and much more. An expert local guide will conduct your tour. You will walk during the tour along the main streets and squares of Salerno, so you can breathe in the everyday life and traditions of the city. At the end of the tour, take a tranquil stroll along the lungomare, the seaside promenade, which is one of the longest in Italy. You can't leave the city if you don't taste the ice cream. Near lungomare, there will be many bars and your guide will offer you this experience.
