Full description

Explore the Capuchin Crypt in Rome using a skip-the-line entry ticket on this walking tour. Follow a guide through the underground chambers containing the bones of some 4,000 people amassed over 5 centuries.

Start your visit at the Capuchin Museums to learn about the place's culture and spirituality. Continue towards the Crypt of the Three Skeletons, the only area where the human skeleton can be seen in its unadorned entirety. Next, visit the Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones. Admire the Crypt of Pelvises, which contains 2 Capuchins serenely reclining in an arched position. Look at the crosses on the ground, which mark the graves of the 7 Capuchins.

Stroll through the Crypt of the Skulls and check out its famous hourglass. Learn about how, when the Capuchins left their old friary near the Trevi Fountain, they decided to transfer the bones of friars who had been buried under the Church of Saint Bonaventure.

In accordance with Capuchin law, which did not allow burials to take place within the churches, an underground cemetery was designed. Here, they deposited the bones brought from the old friary. Since then, the crypt has been the burial place of the Capuchins.

This was a very different and interesting one-hour tour that my five friends and I thoroughly enjoyed (well worth the $50 pp ticket price). To be honest, we booked this tour expecting that it would be a somewhat "Atlas Obscura" macabre sideshow, but it was actually quite artistically and spiritually beautiful. Our guide was great -- extremely knowledgeable, informative, and well-spoken, and she did a great job at conveying the history of the crypt and explaining the details and symbolism of what we were seeing. Although the church only offers one small-group tour a day at 12:30, this tour can be easily incorporated into your day if you're walking in the area of the Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain. That said, this tour may not be for you if you're at all claustrophobic as the space to view the bone chapels is a low-ceilinged very narrow corridor. (The 20 people or so in our small group were packed shoulder to shoulder along the wall.)

Fantastic tour in a very unique way. Our tour guide Slobodan was very knowledgeable and did an awesome job. These Crypts are obviously smaller than the catacombs, but I enjoyed this tour much more. These crypts have the ability to make visitors feel very mortal and fragile. I would definitely go again, and would recommend this tour!

We had some delay/scheduling issues and could not make the tour at our original time. Being unable to reschedule a guided tour was a bummer, however he left our tickets at the location and we were still able to go and do the self guided tour. That is amazing customer service, thank you! The crypts are very interesting and beautiful in a way you wouldn't expect.
