Spend some time walking amongst the steaming clouds of vapor. Move onto Hraunfossar, also known as the "Lava Waterfalls." Take in the sight from several viewing platforms and see how the water stretches for nearly a kilometer over ancient lava fields, with meltwater from the Langjokull glacier pouring into the Hvita river. Just a few yards away is Barnafoss, also known as “the waterfall of the children,” named after the tragic tale of two local children. Your next stop is Husafell, a breathtaking woodland oasis and a historical site with traditional turf houses and even some “elf huts” to delight the children, too. See intriguing works by local art...

I did this experience on the 12th September. The driver was wonderful, he was a great communicator, very helpful and happy to answer any questions. I learned a lot about the history of the area. The van had USB ports and wifi and was very comfortable. The tour was similar as a lot of others, you some of the many waterfalls of Iceland. What made it special was the visit to Husafell, the original strongman stone and the hot pools nearby.

The landmannalauger trip was my favourite, the mountains are beautiful, the gorge with all the waterfalls was spectacular and the natural hot spring was another highlight of my Iceland trip. I wish there was more time to hike in the mountains and swim in the spring. We had to cut our hike short as otherwise we would not have had enough time to enjoy the water. I would love to come back to visit again!

  • From Reykjavik: Secret Lagoon with Transfers

    10. From Reykjavik: Secret Lagoon with Transfers

The Secret Lagoon natural hot springs are located in a village called Flúðir, an approximately 1.5-hour drive from Reykjavik. You will travel there by bus from Reykjavik. The Secret Lagoon, or Gamla Laugin as it is known locally, is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. The facilities have been fully renovated in recent years with indoor changing rooms with lockers and showers, and a small bar and a dining area where snacks and drinks are available for purchase. After you get into the pleasantly warm pool, you can watch the steam as it rises to the air while you relax and feel all tension leave your body. After approximately 2 hours at the Secret Lagoon, you will return to Reykjavik by bus.

Maybe not as flash as the Blue Lagoon but better value, well organised, and in a great location. The journey down from Reykjavik to South Iceland was as good as the final destination. Incredible scenery.
