  • Aurora Borealis: Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik

    2. Aurora Borealis: Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik

The Northern lights are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun's solar energy with the upper atmosphere of the earth near the area of the North Pole. This reaction creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. See if you can glimpse this sublime light display for yourself! Glimpsing the Northern Lights are on the top of many people’s lists when visiting Reykjavik, therefore this tour is organized in such a way as to increase your chances of seeing the phenomenon. The locations visited change every tour, because you will travel to wherever it is most probable you will see them. This tour is unable to guarantee sightings, as the Northern Lights are very unpredictable. If you do not see any of the lights the first time round, you are more than welcome to join the tour again free of charge.

The lights were very weak when we went and you couldn’t see them through the naked eye or smart phone but, if you had a camera you could. The tour guide was very good and really tried to get us a good view of the lights. On the way home we stopped because there was more activity, which I thought was really good of them to do. They really do try and give you every chance to see them. It was -10 degrees so be prepared for the cold

The severe weather intervened in our trip, making it less attractive to go in the water. Had it been less so, we still might not have gone in, but we would certainly have walked around outside to experience the site fully. But it was impossible to walk about - in fact we were snowed in the bus shelter for a few hours. The cafe, however, was very good and despite the atrocious driving conditions, we felt very safe with our driver.

The excursion was very good. All the places we visited were beautiful and interesting. • Reykjavik: Small-Group South Coast Tour

    10. Reykjavik: Small-Group South Coast Tour

You will be picked up from Reykjavik in the morning by your friendly, experienced guide. From here you will start your adventure as a small group of guests traveling in the minibus, guaranteeing that your experience will be both comfortable and personal. One of your first stops will be at the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. This falls, which are over 60 meters tall, tumble from a cliff that curves inwards. This means when there is no ice on the ground, you are able to walk behind it, allowing for some excellent photograph opportunities. Skogafoss Waterfall is next on your list. Though as tall as Seljalandsfoss, it is many times wider and much more powerful. The scale of it is incredibly impressive, especially considering the amount of spray rising as the water smashes against the rocks below. Whilst here, you will be free to walk as close to the waterfall as you dare. If the weather is clear...

Overall an awesome experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and a great storyteller. The group was indeed small, and we all had enough time at each stop to enjoy and see everything. Everyone was very friendly, and we were lucky enough to have nice sunny weather. 10/10 would recommend !
