Rethymno: Traditional Village Bakery Class & Tour w/ Lunch

1. Rethymno: Traditional Village Bakery Class & Tour w/ Lunch

This activity is a combination of a traditional baking class and an experience of the village way of life. Here at Vatos village, potential or experienced "bakers" will be equipped with the tools that they need in order to create delicious village bread. You will focus on mastering the fundamentals as well as discussing traditional techniques as you practice making bread on the stone mill and wood ovens. Your instructor and host is the best around - talented and exceptionally passionate about the craft of baking, she will be more than excited to to pass along her tips, recipe and enthusiasm. The activity will begin with a pick-up from your selected location and you will be driven to Vatos village, where you will arrive at approximately 10:15. You will be taken to the house of Eleftheria (your host), who will greet you with a traditional treat and make you feel welcomed and apart of her family. You will then be taken to a specially arranged cooking spot in order to start your baking lesson, and specifically with the kneading of the bread dough, an approximately 1-hour process. When you have finished, the dough will be left to rest for approximately 45 minutes during which time your village tour will take place. Get to see the village school, the traditional village water faucets, the raki cauldron and "grandma's" traditional kitchen. By the time you return, it will be time to continue with your baking lesson and to shape the bread into its final form. This step takes approximately 1.5-hours and when you are done, the bread will be put in the oven for approximately 45 minutes.    When the baking process comes to an end (at approximately 14:00), you will head towards Vangelio's house, where its owner will invite you into the premise and create a unique family atmosphere. You will first taste your freshly baked bread and enjoy the outcome of your lesson. Vangelio will also teach you about Cretan culture and history, share stories about her family’s life and make you feel just as if you are visiting close relative or friend. Lunch will be served with all the dishes made of genuine pure Cretan products such as olive oil, vegetables, cheese, meat, wine and of course, all the ingredients are fresh and local. The experience will come to an end at approximately 16:00, when you will be driven back to your original starting point.

Rethymno: Full-Day Small-Group Tour with Lunch

2. Rethymno: Full-Day Small-Group Tour with Lunch

Start your Rethymno excursion with a visit to Maria's traditional wood oven bakery, passed down from generation to generation, in the picturesque village of Axos. Here, enjoy a short demonstration on how to make traditional Cretan baked goods, like paximadi, a twice baked bread, and smell the freshly-baked biscuits coming straight out of the oven. Close off this visit with a sip of local Raki, a fragrant, grape-based pomace brandy. Next, continue further into the village and meet another local resident, Mr. Giorgos, who makes spectacular, oversized wooden sculptures. Using wood from local fallen trees, some of his sculptures are three meters high, including the iconic image of Hercules killing the lion of Nemea. Carry on to visit Mrs. Antonia, who is known for her traditional embroidery and weaving techniques. Learn how Cretans have used sheep's wool to create intricate patterns over the decades, and follow the process from start to finish from the spinning of the wool to the weaving in a traditional loom. After another drink of warming Raki, visit the ancient St. George of Diskouri Monastery to learn about Crete's long-standing religious customs. Marvel at the premises, full of colourful flowers, and verdant trees and bushes, all carefully tended to by the nuns. The monastery resembles a small fortress, as it was built during the last period of the Venetian rule when they were protecting the island from the potential invasion of the Turkish army. End your tour with a delicious traditional lunch in the historically important village of Drossia, and in the most famous tavern in the area. Tuck into pork, potatoes, and salad, or a vegetarian option, as your guide recounts the island's history.
