Full description
Explore the 500-year-old city of Higuey, the capital city of the eastern La Altagracia province of the Dominican Republic. Higuey means Land of the Rising Sun in Arawak and was once controlled by a large Taino Indian kingdom who were eventually decimated by Spanish conquistadors. Visit the Basilica, a Roman Catholic cathedral housing the over 500 years old painting of the Altagracia Virgen brought here by Spanish missionaries. The cathedral's importance was solidified with Pope John Paul II's visit in 1992. Then, enjoy a traditional home-cooked buffet of rice and beans, meat, salad, plantains, sweets, and coffee. Experience this meal in rustic country surroundings, just the way it should be.  Next, head to Macao Beach, which is one of the most sought-after coastlines in Punta Cana. Macao's amber sands and azure waters attract beach goers and surfers alike. Only locals know Macao's value as a prime destination for fresh fish and lazy Sunday afternoons with friends. Now enjoy an hour of free time to wade in the Caribbean Ocean, recline on the beach's soft sands, or people watch while refreshments are served.

This tour was amazing! Doing this tour shows you what Dominican Republic really is outside the Resorts. I learned so much about this mazing country. Osvaldo, our tour guide and Junior, the driver make an excellent team. I did 5+ excursions and this one was one of my favorite, specially because of the tour guide, he made sure we had a great time and we sure did! Thank you Osvaldo and Junior! If you visit the Dominican Republic you must do this tour make sure you ask for Osvaldo and Junior, you will learn about this country and have an amazing time. I will totally recommend this tour to everyone I know

Disappointed that tour did not meet description

The tour of Higuey was good, our guide was very knowledgeable and I especially enjoyed contrast of 500 yr old basilica with modern one. Also, the tour of the former ranch was neat but did not offer a lot of detailed information of coffee or cacao production. HOWEVER, we did not visit the beach at all as promised in the description and the " traditional home-cooked buffet of rice and beans, meat, salad, plantains, sweets, and coffee. Experience this meal in rustic country surroundings, just the way it should be" did not happen. We had a minimal (but tasty) meal at a roadside tourist trap. I would not recommend this trip if you are looking forward to a complete meal (per description) and the beach. Also , I tried reaching out to customer service to make them aware of the discrepancy between description and actual tour , I was told a review was the only option . (She did offer money back, which I did not take, because that wasn't my goal in calling).
