Hiking Trails and Wildlife in the High Tatras

3. Hiking Trails and Wildlife in the High Tatras

The High Tatras sit in Slovakia, close to the Polish border. Snow stays all summer here atop jagged granite peaks, waterfalls tumble from stark rock walls, and deep narrow gorges and ridgetop trails offer great hiking, while a wealth of alpine flora is found along quiet forest paths and richly green meadows. This hiking tour will take you to the tallest and most beautiful mountains in Slovakia and Central Europe. The High Tatras ridge has been a popular hiking destination for visitors locals for a long time.   On this hiker’s odyssey, you’ll make easy scrambles up local peaks, traverse long green valleys to high summit ridges, and meet the friendly locals who share the trails with you (hiking is Slovakia’s national sport!). Hikes range in length from five to eight hours, with a return to the hotel at the end of the day. They also vary considerably in difficulty (a few are fairly strenuous); trails are often exposed and chains, ladders, and metal platforms are used to negotiate some of the trickier spots. If you feel like skipping any of the hikes, you’ll find opportunities to explore the local culture. To complement the challenging hikes, you’ll get a taste of the history and culture of the ancient lands of central Europe with visits to unspoiled medieval towns like Levoca, little-changed since the 13th century, Vienna, once the seat of the old Habsburg Empire and the hub of Europe, and Prague, a golden storybook city with beautiful architecture from nearly every major period and style.

From Krakow: Morskie Oko and Slovakia Treetop Walk

4. From Krakow: Morskie Oko and Slovakia Treetop Walk

Discover the natural beauty of Slovakia's breathtaking Tatra region from the treetops. Travel from Krakow to the treetop walk in Ždiar, a folk village with distinctive architecture and culture, situated in the very north of Slovakia around 6 miles from the Polish border. Enjoy a scenic walk up-hill for 30 to 40 minutes to reach the unique treetop path, which is 59 to 78 feet high and is surrounded by magnificent tree crowns. Feel on top of the world on the wooden bridge, which is held up by huge pillars and stretches around 2,000 feet. Reach out and feel the treetops as you find yourself in the heart of the forests of Bachledova Valley. Indulge your senses in a breathtaking panoramic view of the Tatra Mountains and Pieniny National Park. With fair weather, gaze out over the highest peak of the Pieniny mountains in the distance: the iconic Three Crowns Massif. Deep in the Tatra Mountains, Morskie Oko Lake was formed by glaciers. The lake is surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Tatra Mountains, which makes for magnificent views. It is also home to many animals, birds, and even natural fish stocks, something that is rare in the Tatras. The hike to the lake is about five miles and takes about 2-2.5 hours each way. The trail runs along a paved roadway and is not difficult. Enjoy beautiful views along the way. At the end of your visit to the lake, hike back to the starting point.

What people are saying about Presov Region

A wonderful day in great scenery

We had a very nice day. Our driver did an excellent and caring job of all organizational matters, drove well and safely and told us about the country and its people. The treetop path offers a wonderful view of the Tatra Mountains and information boards provide information about nature and environmental protection. The raft trip on the Dunajec (with the word "rafting" you have a somewhat "wild" idea of the river - but it is a very quiet trip) leads through a beautiful landscape and the raftsman explains what special features there are to see on the way. An all-round successful day!

Our driver Mark was very nice and helpful. But website needs updating as the cable cars are not working for the tree top mountain excursion and we were not aware of the 40 minute strenuous walk until Mark informed us on the day.

First of all, Mr. Paweł, a driver and a person with very high personal culture and historical knowledge, made the trip very successful
