Top 7 Things To See And Do In Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is the biggest city in the Azores, Portugal's offshore island cluster right in the middle of the Atlantic. With its vivid nature and colonial architecture, it will give you a unique European and tropical feel.
1. Sete Cidades Massif
The island of Sao Miguel is covered in craters, some of which have become lakes, including the huge Lagoa do Fogo. Explore this bumpy, beautiful area by 4x4.
2. Whale Watching
Ponta Delgada's Atlantic location means it's one of the best places on the planet to spot whales, dolphins, and turtles in their natural environment. Boat tours depart regularly!
Ponta Delgada started out as a humble fishing village, and now its port is home to a regatta, pavilion, and quay. It attracts yachting fanatics and the fashion elite.
4. Convent of Our Lady of Hope
This facade looks like it could have been embroidered and is just one of the beautiful old buildings on offer. Look out for the Fonte Bela Palace and the Colosseum too!
Proud of its status as the only tea plantation in the EU, Gorreana can be found on the northern coast of Sao Miguel. Check out the area and grab some tea to take home!
6. Carlos Machado Museum
In 1546, the village where Ponta Delgada now stands was obliterated by an earthquake. Luckily you can still learn some things about the history of Sao Miguel island in this museum.
7. Ferraria Spa
Soak in a natural thermal pool connected to the ocean, surrounded by volcanic rock. The water temperature reaches 95 degrees, making it the best bath of your life.
Planning Your Visit
When should I go?
In May, the island of Sao Miguel comes into full bloom. If you absolutely can't miss the whales, then the summer months are the best time to go.
How can I get around the city?
The main form of public transportation is bus. However, these may vary in terms of regularity, so if you can, it's best to rent a car. A taxi from Ponta Delgada airport to the city center should cost around 15.00 EUR.

One of the best tours I had so far! Our guide Filip was just fantastic, nice, kind, attentive, funny and his knowledge was incredible. He was also an excellent driver. Everything was perfectly planned. Filip was able to fit in all the sites we wanted to see. He was always making sure that we were happy and having a great experience. He also provided us with a lot of detailed explanations & offered additional activities that enhanced our trip. I highly recommend this tour with Filip
Really wonderful kayaking in an incredible setting. Highly professional operation and extremely accommodating when we arrived late due to some poor navigation!
Very professional approach. We visited a large part of the island of Sao Miguel and learned many informations that we never discovered. I warmly recommend.
