Next, delve into the island’s dark history with a visit to Coconut Prison, also known as Phu Quoc Prison. The prison was established during the French colonization of Vietnam in the 1940s and expanded in the 1960s by US-backed Southern Vietnamese troops in order to imprison Vietnamese soldiers. Wander around the prison and see a selection of exhibitions which document what life was like here and depict the brutal conditions and torture that were commonplace. After the prison, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to a nearby fish sauce factory. Phu Quoc Nuoc Mam is a popular and famous Vietnamese fish sauce that locals still make in the traditional way. Enjoy a tour of the factory and learn about the process of making fish sauce, which is similar to that of a brewery. Travel to one of the island’s most beautiful beaches next, the stunning Bai Sao Beach. Soak up the sunshine as you stroll along the white sandy shore, or cool off in the glistening turquoise water. You will be picked up from your hotel and then head to the pier to jump on board the boat and start the squid-fishing tour. This tour is a great way to experience the lifestyle of the local fisherman. After enjoying watching the sun set over the sea, it will be time for you to start fishing for squid.
