Easy to buy it with time indicated already on the tickets. We avoided the long lines and saved time. The only thing I would have done was to also pre book the audio guides if it was available. We had to be on a 15 minute line for it. But otherwise we were able to go through the whole palace in three hours including the gardens.

It’s beautiful & I would recommend this as a whole day activity. Morning in the palace, afternoon buy a tram train ticket at gardens & cover other areas (hop on- off) I got to know about tram train later & was strolling in the huge gardens which was also nice but missed the other 2 palaces around the corner as they close by 5ish.

Loved our self-guided day at Versaille. I would recommend getting an early start since the gardens open earlier. We easily could have spent more time here. We didn't end up renting bikes but wish we would have! Word of caution- the line for Versaille palace is a bit misleading - don't arrive any earlier than 30 mins prior or they'll have you get out of line just to get back in for the security & ticket check. All in all a good experience & the surrounding town is very charming.
