Full description
Boasting an eclectic and ostentatious Baroque design, the Opera Garnier is one of the most extravagant representations of Second Empire architecture in France. Take this 90-minute guided tour of its public areas and you will discover flamboyant art works as you follow in the footsteps of fashionable 19th-century French society. Inaugurated in 1875 and named after its exciting young architect, Charles Garnier, it is the largest opera house in Europe. Once you have met your guide at the museum entrance, you will be taken to the “Rotonde des Abonnes” (Members’ Rotunda), once used as the formal welcome area for opera guests. Garnier’s unique signature will be pointed out among the magnificent arabesques, before you move on to explore the building's galaxy of riches. You will set eyes on the writhing snakes of the bronze “Pythonisse” sculpture, before climbing the double stairway of the “Grand Escalier” (Main Staircase). Imagine the swish of crinolines as you admire the breathtaking décor and stroll through vast foyers, filled with sparkling mosaics, colorful marble columns and gold-leaf flourishes. Everywhere you look will be a feast for the eyes. Throughout the tour, expert and enthusiastic guides from the Opera de Paris point out the splendid paintings and sculptures that help to make the Opera Garnier one of the most rewarding museums in Paris, as well as one of its most impressive working theaters.

The price was reasonable and we enjoyed our tour. The ticket stated "Please present your voucher at the guided tours counter in order to redeem your *entrance tickets*, you will then be directed to your guide." -then it says- "Due to the security check at the *entrance*, we advise you to arrive 30 to 45 minutes prior to the time of the departure." - we thought that meant you had to exchange the voucher for your ticket BEFORE ENTERING. You need to go thru security FIRST and ENTER the building. Then get in line to exchange the voucher for your ticket. We keep looking around the outside of the building for a ticket window (duh). Hate to see what that entrance line looks like in the summer. Also you give them your ID of choice to get a headset. To get the ID back you have to give the head set back at the end. I don't think they sanitize the headsets. We were asked put them back into the zip lock baggy they came in -after the tour- and hand them back to the guide. Gross! Bring hand wipes.

Everyone has to queue to get through security, having tickets doesn’t speed up the process, you really do need to give yourselves 20-30 minutes to clear security and pick up even pre-ordered tickets. Definitely worth paying a little extra for the love-guide tour so you get to sit in the orchestra seats.

My partner and I really enjoyed the very exuberant and animated presentation that our guide William Osmond gave our group . His gift for storytelling brought the history vividly to life. We stayed longer than others to continue asking questions and conversing. William was quite generous with his time. Like all good teachers, he clearly has a passion for his work and his subject matter.
