Full description
Your tour will begin as you gather at the meeting point in front of the restaurant I Crateri Silvestri at 8:45AM. Throughout this meeting your guides will prepare you for your experience and after a short briefing, you will take the cable car together to an elevation of 2,500 meters, where you will board your off-road Jeep to ascend to a height of 2,900 meters. You will then begin trekking along a path which from Torre del Filosofo leads to the summit craters of Etna. You will traverse through lavic fields, which have been the product of recent activities of the New South East Crater. After traveling for about 2 kilometers and having reached a height of 3,250 meters, you will reach the western portion of the summit crater terrace, where it will be possible to admire the central crater of the volcano and to fully understand the associated phenomenologies. Your trekking will then continue along the rim of the main crater, before turning into a descent which is constituted by ash and volcanic materials towards the craters (which date back to October 27, 2002). This will allow you to walk back to a height of 2,500 meters, forming a total 7.5-kilometer round trip. After this, you descend from 2,500 meters to Rifugio Sapienza with the cable car.

Well organized tour, some waiting in line for the 4x4 buses both up and down, but not extremely long. Very knowledgeable guide, told us a lot about volcanism in general and Etna in particular. He also adjusted his pace to make sure I can keep up, as I was by far the oldest member of the group. We were also lucky to have clear and sunny weather, though it was biting cold and extremely windy at the top. Overall, a very nice (and tiring) experience.

We saw so much more and got so much closer than we even imagined!! Our guide Daniele was amazing - so kind and so knowledgable. A must for anyone who is in the area! Be wary - our original trip was cancelled due to bad weather (mid October) so make sure you have an alternative day you can postpone too so you aren’t disappointed. Also - bring gloves and wear more layers than you think!!

The reception in the parking lot was already pleasant. The further explanation and that you can borrow sticks and warm coats is also very nice. We were very lucky with the weather as it was sunny all the time. Along the way a lot of explanation about the environment and the ins and outs about volcanoes. Nicos was a good guide also in terms of attention per person. We really had a great day!
