  • Catania: Half-Day Buggy Tour of the Etna Volcano

    1. Catania: Half-Day Buggy Tour of the Etna Volcano

Explore the Etna volcano by buggy on this unique 4-hour activity. After a quick briefing on how to drive your buggy, head off with the guide to the villages of Pedara and Nicolosi. Continue along a track that passes an old lava rock quarry, and experience the buggy’s off-road abilities. Drive on a scenic road leading to Rifugio Sapienza. After a coffee break, take a walk around the top of the Silvestri Craters. Next, take the road down to the Cassone lava cave. Enjoy a quick visit inside, equipped with a helmet and a flashlight. Continue on the route, stopping to admire the immense Valle del Bove from Mount Zoccolaro on the way to Zafferana Etnea, Viagrande and San Gregorio.

This was really an off-the-road experience. The buggy was ready, perfectly functioning and completely safe. You are accompanied by a professional person who explains you how to drive and also something about the environment. You see the Etna environment from really very close. Pls note that the start and ending point is not in the city center of Catania, but a bit outside. A taxi ride costs 40 euro one-way. For me, after 4 hours driving, I had enough of the noise of the buggy.

  • Full-Day Etna and Wine Tour from Catania

    2. Full-Day Etna and Wine Tour from Catania

This day trip begins with a drive up to Rifugio Sapienza, with stops at viewpoints en route. The guide will provide commentary on the volcano's history and point out sites of previous eruptions. Trek along one of the nature paths up to 2,000 meters or take the Etna high altitude option. For the high altitude option, ride a cable car and special 4x4 minibus to Torre del Filosofo, at 2,900 meters. Afterwards, explore a lava cave, equipped with a helmet and flashlight. The final stop will be at one of the area’s top wineries, with a tasting session that includes a sparkling wine and 4 still wines. During the tasting session, enjoy local cold cuts, cheeses, pate and olive oil.

Danilo our guide was great! He was really nice and welcoming, explained a lot and gave us recommendations for the rest of our visit in Catania. The added value of this tour was the easy pick-up and the vineyard visit with tasting of great wines. Now with covid they don't accept visitors that are not part of a private tour, so it was a great opportunity (and the tastings are actually quite a big lunch). the cave was nice but a bit underwhelming. We paid additional 67 euros pp to go the the max altitude allowed (2750).

What an absolutely incredible experience! We were picked up by our guide (Danilo) exactly on time from our apartment. We expected to be part of a small group however we were amazed to find out that we would be in a private group for the day (two guests and Danilo). We suspect this was due to a lack of tourists (and therefore bookings) because of the current Covid situation, but we were extremely impressed. The walk at 2000m was superb and a special experience. At the vineyard we were once again spoiled, as we were the only two people in the whole place! There was enough food and incredible wine to come out of our ears and very well explained by the vineyard guide. Now the best part - Danilo! His knowledge of Etna and his stories from his extensive travels were really what made the day so special. He was extremely helpful and patient whilst we savoured every bit of the experience, and also provided us with many recommendations for the rest of our stay. A bargain at €100pp! Grazie!

We went offseason in mid February, essentially had a private tour to Mt Etna. Arrived at the office with the address provided, buggy was already out front ready to go when we got there, tour guide met us out front and was very friendly! Speaking fairly good english, he brought us inside to give us more info and have us sign some papers and offered restroom before we left. He showed us quickly how to operate the buggy and seatbelts. We jumped in the buggy and followed him in his truck through town until we got to the offroad part. He would stop every now and then the check on us and bring us to points of interest for info/history/pictures, etc. at the top we stopped for coffee and bathrooms then went to a small cave where he provided helmets/flashlights. The cave was interesting to see how it formed but was small. Afterwards we took some other offroad trails and had a lot of fun. Rode back through town and back to office, bathroom offered again to clean up. Well worth the money!!!

This was really an off-the-road experience. The buggy was ready, perfectly functioning and completely safe. It was an amazing experience !!!! During the event, while entering the volcano, we witnessed an explosion. We all had a great time and our Italian guides are super professional companions. I recommend the GET YOUR GUIDE website without any worries !!!

Francesco was incredible! He was a fantastic knowledgeable guide, always prepared and quick to point out where to grab a coffee or try this or that. The tour itself was a really fun day. It’s a great way to experience Mt Etna without renting a car!
