- Duration: 6 hours
Ascend to the summit of the craters of Mount Etna, one of the most coveted excursions a hiker can make. Depart from Sapienza Refuge in Nicolosi, and ascend 2,504 meters by cable car. Then, ride in a 4x4 Jeep up to 2,900 meters, to begin your hike. You’ll hike 1.5 hours uphill, passing many craters and taking long pauses to take pictures and rest.
Experience the incredible feeling of being on top of the world in this rocky, beautiful landscape with the giant sky above you. After reaching the summit, descend for 2 hours back to the cable car, which will take you to your departure point.
Unfortunately due to volcanic activity it wasnt allowed to hike to the summit. We got messaged about this a day in advance with an offer for an alternative past previous lava flows and craters, which we took. It still was a beautifull experience with a very friendly, experienced and knowledgeable, multi lingual guide. We didn't get to take the 4x4 bus because we were hiking on a lowere altidtude but got that refunded through get your guide.
Your tour will begin as you gather at the meeting point in front of the restaurant I Crateri Silvestri at 8:45AM. Throughout this meeting your guides will prepare you for your experience and after a short briefing, you will take the cable car together to an elevation of 2,500 meters, where you will board your off-road Jeep to ascend to a height of 2,900 meters. You will then begin trekking along a path which from Torre del Filosofo leads to the summit craters of Etna. You will traverse through lavic fields, which have been the product of recent activities of the New South East Crater. After traveling for about 2 kilometers and having reached a height of 3,250 meters, you will reach the western portion of the summit crater terrace, where it will be possible to admire the central crater of the volcano and to fully understand the associated phenomenologies. Your trekking will then continu...
Well organized tour, some waiting in line for the 4x4 buses both up and down, but not extremely long. Very knowledgeable guide, told us a lot about volcanism in general and Etna in particular. He also adjusted his pace to make sure I can keep up, as I was by far the oldest member of the group. We were also lucky to have clear and sunny weather, though it was biting cold and extremely windy at the top. Overall, a very nice (and tiring) experience.
From the meeting point at Funivia dell'Etna, you’ll start the day by catching the cable car and bus to the trailhead. After trekking for about 2 kilometers, you will reach the western portion of the summit crater terrace where it is possible to admire the stateliness of the Central Crater. The trekking will continue along the crater wall before starting downhill on the steep path constituted by ash and volcanic scoria along the southern portion of the summit. Complete the extraordinary journey back to Rifugio Sapienza by cable car.

Even though we couldn't reach the summit due to increased activity of Etna and we were refunded part of the paid amount (because the part with jeeps were excluded) it was an amazing experience. Guides were funny and told us a lot of interesting information and even showed us pictures and videos of freshly erupted lava in their phones. The hike wasn't too challenging, but we were still exhausted after the day of climbing up and harsh winds. It was a great tip from other hikers in the comments below that you should take more clothes than you think you need :D I didn't take a jacket at the cabin before the hike at that was my mistake. Also, gloves would have been helpful too. The temperature at the top was 3-5 celsius.
Superb hike with Edouardo Amore, we could not go to the top due to the activity of the volcano but the secondary hiking route was super interesting with breathtaking views. Edouardo was a great guide, he even sent us some videos of the active volcano and lava flows after the hike. I recommend!
Excellent and Edoardo our guide was perfect, thanks! Too much activity in the volcano to be able to go at the top on that day, but we had a very interesting alternative at the secondary craters and Edoardo made it very thorough, and fun. One of my best memories from Sicily this summer
We were lucky enough to witness an eruption of etna during this day which made it fantastic. The route proposed by the guide was clear and accessible to all. Our guide Eduardo was really wonderful with all his explanations that accompanied the excursion
Fabulous day out. Certainly not for unfit people. Highly recommend as it’s like a visit to the moon
