Cappadocia: Small-Group Guided Tour

6. Cappadocia: Small-Group Guided Tour

The driver and the guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning. Then you can decide with them what to visit. Cappadocia's most famous attraction, for good reason, is the Göreme Open Air Museum, a complex of medieval painted cave churches carved out by Orthodox monks. There are over 10 cave churches in the Göreme Open Air Museum. Along with rectories, dwellings, and a religious school, they form a large monastic complex carved out of a roughly ring-shaped rock formation in the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia. Old Cavusin, with its rock-cut dwellings and stone houses, had several hermitages. The two most important churches in Cavusin are the Great Basilica dedicated to St. John the Baptist and Cavusin Church or the 'Great Pigeon House'. The old city of Avanos, whose name in ancient times was Venessa, overlooks the longest river in Turkey, the Kızılırmak (Red River). The ceramic trade in this district and its countless pottery factories date back to the Hittites, and the ceramic clay from the red silt of the Kızılırmak has always been used locally. Watch the potters at work using the kick wheel, using a technique that has not changed for generations. Pasabag, the remarkable earth pillars, can also be seen here, in the middle of a vineyard - hence the name of the place which means: the Pasha’s vineyard. Also known as Imaginary Valley or Pink Valley, this area does not have cave churches like the other valleys of Cappadocia. The small fairy chimneys in the valley form a lunar landscape, or moonscape, by their strange appearance. The valley has many animal-shaped rocks. Some of the most commonly seen shapes include camel, snake, seals, and dolphins. Continue to the Underground City, the biggest and deepest underground settlement, which boasts eight levels connected by narrow tunnels.

Goreme Open Air Museum with Underground City Tour

8. Goreme Open Air Museum with Underground City Tour

After pick up, head to the deepest Underground city to explore its 4 floors, 30 meters deep. Move on to the highest point of the center of Cappadocia in Uchisar town, Uchisar Castle. Visit the most important sight, Goreme Open Air Museum, to see its many churches with wall paintings (frescoes) describing the life of Jesus Christ, dating back to the 10th century. The Cavusin village will be your next stop. Make the most of this trip to see an abandoned village and its Greek Houses.  Take some time for lunch in Avanos before visiting a pottery shop, and learn how to make potteries and seramics. Move on to Pasabag, a sacred place and home to many monks. In Pasabag, prepare to see some of the largest fairy chimney rock formations, with two or three caps each.  Finally, stop at Devrent Valley and marvel at its rock formations, shaped like animals, the reason that this place has been nicknamed Imagination Valley. At around 5:00 PM, head back to your hotel.

Cappadocia: Salt Lake and Underground Cities with Lunch

Roam the shores of the Salt Lake, and, weather permitting, even take a dip into its waters.   The day starts with pickup from your accommodation in Cappadocia. Journey to Nevsehir Hill Fort near the city of Kayserit and marvel at the Tatlarin Underground City, a maze of tunnels and rooms that dwarfs all other finds to date. Enter an ancient toilet – proof that toilets were being used in Anatolia around 3,000 years ago, and explore the giant rooms believed to have been used for religious or military purposes. Continue to Saratli Underground City, a mystical city famous for its history and architecture. A 7-story structure, Sarati has a water well, wine cellar, bath, toilet, barn, kitchen, and around 40 different rooms.  It is believed to have been used as a sanctuary and defense place, and within it, there are secret tunnels connecting to the peasants’ homes proving access to the underground city in the event of an attack from enemies.

It's show was impressive, but the dinner was poor, poor starters and they didn't serve dessert. It is saved and we recommend it since the show is worth it
