9. Sorrento: Day Tour to Pompeii Ruins & Mount Vesuvius
Travel back in time to the devastating day in 79 AD the brooding volcano of Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the Roman city of Pompeii beneath molten ash.
On arrival, your expert guide will take you on a 2-hour tour through the remains of this UNESCO world heritage site remarkably frozen in time for almost 2,000 years. One of the most popular destinations in the world, you will hear stories about The Forum, Thermal Baths, Lupanare, Greek Theater and plaster casts of the bodies of Pompeii people.
Following a typical Naples lunch of pizza at one of Pompeii’s cafés, you will then be driven close to the summit of the mountain that destroyed it. From there, it's just a walk to the lip of the crater.
The only active volcano in continental Europe, Vesuvius has erupted many times, but it was the destruction of Pompeii and its surrounding towns that made it most famous. Climb to the top, and walk around the crater, taking in the atmosphere of the smoking mountain. Enjoy the stunning views over the Bay of Naples.
You will return to Sorrento at approximately 5:15 PM, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, the cruise ship, or the railway station.
