Full description
Travel back in time to a day in 79 AD when the volcanic Mount Vesuvius violently erupted, covering the everyday Roman town of Pompeii in molten ash. This full-day tour from Sorrento takes you to both sites, interrupted only to enjoy lunch. Depart from Sorrento in the morning and enjoy the scenic ride along the Sorrentine peninsula towards Pompeii. Upon arrival, explore the remains of the baths, bakeries, arena, and brothels of the Ancient Roman city. Follow in the footsteps of its residents, some of whom are immortalized in startling plaster casts at the precise moment of their death. Your guide will provide a historic commentary about the ruins, telling a terrible tale of the day it was destroyed, and bringing the remarkable site back to life. After lunch, head to Mount Vesuvius by coach and climb to the summit of Vesuvius from the parking area. It is a 20-minute walk, traveling through soft volcanic ash and pumice. Vesuvius has erupted many times since 79 AD, and lava flows have scarred the sides, stripping away vegetation to leave a visible reminder of the destructive power of nature. But you will be rewarded with stunning views into the crater, where even now steam escapes from its vents. Look down too at the panoramic vistas of the Bay of Naples, before your scenic drive back to Sorrento.

It was a good trip because we got to see what we booked to see ! Our guide was sweet enough but nothing compared to the previous guide on a different excursion. Maybe we were a little spoilt so it would have been hard to meet his standard. Lunch was annoying. We were ushered into a restaurant where we were given a menu with 6 choices . No prices on the menu. I was a bit confused... was this included in the trip? I couldn’t remember actually. Anyway, it wasn’t so we had a very mediocre lunch with a “ free” drink . It wasn’t expensive but we should have been given the choice to go elsewhere. I felt manipulated into a situation. The drop off took forever but that is to be expected I suppose. My fault for booking a large group trip . I won’t make that mistake again if possible. But Pompeii was fabulous and Vesuvius just awesome!

Good tour

Excellent guide and very informative. 2 hour tour just right lengjt to give an overview of Pompei. Pickup point was very confusing as lots of buses coming in to pick up clients on similar tour. Wish tickets and bus had number on so can tell when your bus arrives. Restaurant not special. Choice of meals but staff rushing around. Asked for butter for bread did not get. Asked for sauces and finally came around and handed one packet of mayonnaise and rushed off before wife could ask for some. No salt or pepper on table.

Superb tour guide made the day

It was all a bit manic trying to guess which bus we were to get on but once on the tour was well worth it. Our tour guide Laura was full of really helpful knowledge and trivia about the venues. The tour of Pompei could have been difficult had it not been for her taking us to and explaining the places of real interest. After the visit she had arranged a local restaurant meal which was well received before heading to Vesuvius. Walking to the top from the bus took about 15 minutes and we walked around the crater and back. In total the walk was was about 1 hour. We dropped back at the same pick up point.
