Full description

Travel back in time and explore the Catacombs of San Gennaro to learn more about the patron saint of Naples. Discover what lies beneath street level as you see stunning frescoes and Byzantine paintings from the 9th to the 10th century AD.

Explore the history of the paleo-Christian burial site with an English or Italian-speaking guide. Get explanations about the 4th-century expansion following the transfer of the remains of St. Agrippinus to the underground basilica dedicated to him.

See the large baptismal font commissioned by Bishop Paul II, who took refuge in the catacombs in the 8th century during iconoclastic struggles.

Get a closer look at the details of the upper catacomb, decorated at the beginning of the 3rd century in the so-called Pompeian style, and now home to some of the earliest Christian paintings in southern Italy.

Be amazed by the precious Crypt of the Bishops and its 5th-century mosaics, including one depicting the Bishop of Carthage, St. Quodvultdeus.

Pretty incredible experience. The catacombs were fascinating and the tour itself was very informative. You get to learn about the catacombs themselves but also some local history. The tour my friends and I took was around 45 minutes. You get time to look around along with the planned tour stops. Pictures were allowed as long as the flash was off. Would highly reccomend the tour!

This was so much better than expected. The guide was so informative and presented the tour with enthusiasm. The trip underground was fascinating, the history of the burial site equally so. It was amazing to see how a whole community was carved out of lava rock. Question were answered well and there was plenty to see. Price reasonable to. At the end of the tour we found out we could have a free tour of the catacombes of san Gaudisio below a nearby church as well with the ticket. Unfortunately we had no time as it seems to be an even longer tour. Maybe next time. It was interesting to see a different area of naples anyway which was about half an hour from the main tourist route of via toledo. I wish I had time to explore around there longer. From what we were told this really was a community project bringing money and jobs into a poor area of Naples.

The catacombs are amazing! And given the fact that they started to work on arranging them back in 2008 with only 4 people is even more admirable. The English tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered a lot of questions. It shows he is very passionate about his work. You have to take this tour!
