Full description
Spend a lovely day out on a boat exploring the beautiful Chiemsee and its two picturesque islands, the Herreninsel and the Fraueninsel. Known as “the Bavarian Ocean,” Chiemsee is the largest fresh-water lake near Munich. Herreninsel boasts wonderful Herrenchiemsee, a palace built by King Ludwig II in 1878 in the image of Versailles in France. In some respects, however, Herrenchiemsee actually surpasses Versailes – its Hall of Mirrors is a famous example. With its elegant gardens and walkways and the beautiful interiors of gold, glass, and porcelain, the palace is a visually stunning monument to opulence. King Ludwig's difficult personality is reflected in his famous elevated dining table, which was raised and lowered through the floor so the reclusive King did not have to see his servants. This tour gives you the full story of Chiemsee and its islands. You even get the option of touring the interior of the palace. This full day tour is one of the most unique and special touring experiences in Germany.

Our tour guide Anna was immediately enthusiastic and throughout the day answered many questions accurately and gave fascinating additional information. She was also happy to discuss topics that were separate from the tour theme. She was articulate, spoke very good English and the span of her knowledge was highly impressive. I would certainly recommend her and would enjoy it if she were my guide again.

Susanna was an exellent guide and answered many of our questions in addition to telling us the history of Herrencheimsee and Ludwig II. She also offered valuable insight into the culture and language differences of Germany. We had plenty of time to enjoy a lunch overlooking the lake but a wee bit more time on the first island might have been good... We had plenty of time to explore the beauty and quaint village on the second island. I also enjoyed the train through town and the large train. Our group was small and it was a pleasure getting to know people from around the globe.

Great sightseeing and good combination of nature & historical sites. Lake and palace very beautiful, the museum informative and the steam train ride was fun. Well organized in terms of tickets for the rides & sites, so no queuing necessary. Only downsides were (a) the main train ride does not have reserved seats, so we ended standing up on the way out (75 minutes) and (b) time available for lunch is on the shortish side.
