Full description
On March 22, 1933, the Nazis opened the first state concentration camp at Dachau. Today, the site serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives, and a place of education and reflection.  You will meet your guide at 09:00 AM in front of the tourist information center on Marienplatz in central Munich. Your guide will take care of your travel tickets for you and ride with you on the local train system to the old ninth century town of Dachau, 10 miles north west of Munich. After a short bus ride which very much follows the route that the prisoners would have taken, you will arrive at the site to begin your tour. Your guide will escort you through the site and will be very keen to furnish you with as much factual information as possible delivered in an objective manner. This tour, on a human level, is very thought provoking and your guide will also encourage questions and discussion. By adopting this approach, the hope is that people meditate on their visit and take time to digest their experience of it afterwards. The tour will focus on the plight of the victims, those that died, and also the survivors. Individual prisoners will be mentioned and their first hand experiences explained. However, the perpetrators of the crimes, the SS, will also be examined, to try to understand their complicity and how they could have reconciled themselves with the crimes they committed. Your guide will allocate a period of time for exploration of the excellent museum exhibit, giving guests the opportunity to have a degree of independence for reflection on the site. Upon meeting up you will be accompanied by your guide for the return journey to Munich Marienplatz, with the opportunity to depart at main station if that is more convenient for you.

We had an excellent day with Alun, even though we were the only two on the tour. Alun has an incredibly diverse background and can really speak with his tour about heavy intellectual subjects, how the tour applies to current events, and theoretical possibilities. We learned an incredible amount on our tour of Dachau which really helped us further appreciate the terrible events that happened there. Alun is an extremely stimulating guide and we thoroughly enjoyed his company!

Alan was an excellent tour guide with perfect knowledge of the relevant history. Our only "complain" would be that he could have been more enthusiastic all around. Please note: the train and bus transfers are a bit tricky so be ready and alert to stay as close as possible to the tour guide (Alan did warn us about this). As for the concentration camp itself, we had expected to be more affected than we actually were, perhaps because the site has been restored and is kept clean and tidy. In any event, the history is shocking.

Our guide, Alun, was so knowledgeable and very sensitive about the difficult subject matter he was sharing with us. I learned a lot during the tour. He respected our time as well. Several people were late, but he got us on the train on time. The late arrivals met up with us at the site. He was kind to them but let them know we had a schedule to keep. I was grateful because the site got crowded about an hour before we had to head back to Munich. It was an experience I will never forget.
