Full description

Enjoy a physical challenge with rewarding views on this guided climb to the top of Etna. Ride the cable car then trek to the summit. Take breaks along the way and capture unique photos of the summit craters.

Meet your guide in Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza. After getting your equipment and enjoying an initial briefing, begin your hike to the top of Mount Etna, which sits at 3,300 meters above sea level.

Take the cable car to quickly reach an altitude of 2,500 meters, then a special 4x4 bus to 2,900 meters, near Torre del Filosofo. Neither the cable car nor the bus is included in the tour price.

From there, start the 2-hour ascent, taking intermediate breaks to enjoy the views during the trek. Walk through the lunar-looking lava fields that will lead you right to the summit of Etna: the highest active volcano in Europe. Admire the peculiar features that characterize the summit area.

Begin the descent through fun sands. Visit Mount Etna's Barbagallo flank craters and a lava flow channel. Finally, take the cable car downhill again to return to the starting point.

The hike was wonderful—magnificent views both upward and down to the sea. The terrain thrilling and exotic. At one point, the black rock we were walking on was still warm and venting steam. The guide said the rock had been molten just 4 months before! Our guide was clearly knowledgeable, but his inability to communicate well in English was disappointing. Also, there must be a million fascinating stories about Etna that I am sure he could have shared but didn’t. That was a missed opportunity. Still, it was an unforgettable experience.

Great experience with stunning scenery. Our guide Fabio, also a geologist and volcanologist, was charming and gave us lots of explanations about Etna and volcanoes in general, the pace of the hike was accessible to the whole group. We were very lucky because the visibility was at the top (November 1).
