Highlights
  • Travel around off-road passages through old lava flows
  • Trek past and admire the most recent lava flows
  • Follow quiet paths away from the tourist trails
  • Walk around the valle del bove, the biggest Etna's caldera
Full description

Embark on a trek of iconic Mount Etna with a naturalist guide. Take in outstanding views, learn local history from your guide, visit a lava cave, and see the southeastern crater, Etna's most active area. Enjoy included trekking poles, shoes, and warm clothing.

Following your pickup, you will head in the direction of Etna. Passing off-road through Trazzere where you can see the lava flows of 1792, your guide will explain the fauna and flora of the volcano of Etna.

Learn Mount Etna's history as you travel in the direction of the Bove Valley, which is an ancient caldera formed about 64,000 years ago due to the collapse of 2 major eruptive centers. You'll soon arrive at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, where your hike starts. Follow quiet trails away from the tourist paths. Pass recent lava flows and soak up views of the coastline. Throughout the trek, you can stop to taste sandwiches and local products, at your own expense, and visit a lava cave. At the conclusion of your experience, you will be returned back to your point of origin.

Probably the best part of our Sicily trip, we absolutely LOVED this hike! It's not too easy but with a generally good physical condition it's absolutely doable (~400 m elevation, 8 km). Upon arrival we got got boots, jackets, gloves and hiking sticks, which really come in handy, so don't hesitate to take them! We made frequent stops to listen to the guide's explanation about the Etna, to take photos and to catch our breath. It's really off the main path, luckily we haven't encountered any other tourist groups during the hike. The view during the whole hike but especially from the highest point is really breathtaking! Thank you Ernesto and Sergio for taking such a good care of us, it was truly a lifetime experience! Ps. Try the sandwich, the reviews don't lie, it really is amazing!

So glad I chose this trek! Had the most incredible time. Really fun hike with incredible views. I highly recommend this, as it avoids tourist routes, so you really feel at one with nature. A lot of other reviews mention the sandwich too, which is honestly why I mainly chose this - wanted to see what the hype was about! 100% agree, lives to its expectations haha! I would love to do this again! The guides were also incredible, learnt so much on the car ride to and from. Very funny guys, who really couldn’t have been more friendly. They truly made this experience.

Our guide, Marco, was excellent. He picked us up and then took us to a little cafe to get a sandwich to eat on our hike. It was the BEST sandwich I've ever had! Kind of like an eggplant parm but with hard boiled egg on it too. I know it sounds weird, but it was delicious! The trek is not for the weak. Its a very soft surface you're walking on and you're at 2000m elevation to start with and climb to about 2500m. Its beautiful scenery and a great workout!
