Experience

Highlights
  • Be amazed by the enormous sandstone structures of Monument Valley
  • Explore a traditional hogan with an eagle eye looking upon you
  • Marvel at the beautiful Eye of the Sun and the Ear of the Wind arches
Full description

Enter the backcountry of Monument Valley to visit the popular arches, dwellings, and petroglyphs made by the ancient Anasazi people. Stop first to admire the Sleeping Dragon with clouds above, followed by the Chief’s Head with its bonnet of feathers.  Moving on, explore the traditional dwelling of the Navajo people known as hogans. Admire the round, cone-shaped, and multi-sided structures. With or without internal posts, they were built with timber or stonewall and packed with earth or bark.

For a summerhouse, the door faces east to welcome the rising sun for wealth and good fortune. Your guide will provide information and a short demonstration of the Navajo people and their lifestyles.  Save the best for last and marvel at an arch that replicates a traditional hogan with an eagle eye looking upon you. Take a panoramic view of the Eye of the Sun, a beautifully shaped eye with sun rays beaming through it.

Last will be the Ear of the Wind, standing against a steep sand dune that, if you walk up to it, you're most likely to bring home Monument Valley's souvenir: sand in your shoes.

The tour was a great value and enhanced our understanding of the area and the Navajo culture with details about traditional customs and current life. Our guide, Michael was friendly and engaging and exuded enthusiasm for his topic. It absolutely was worth the time and money.

Very unhappy with head guide. No bags are allowed- I understand that. My very expensive camera needs its case to protect it from the dust. She claimed that it is n bag. Had to remove the camera and put the cover bag in my car. That is just absurd. Please change this stupid rule!!!

We were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by our guide, John, who took care throughout the tour to ensure that we had an enjoyable, interesting and informative visit. John was engaging, good humoured and friendly. The information that he provided via his narration was fascinating, and greatly enhanced our overall enjoyment of our visit to Monument Valley. We were even treated to an enchanting flute performance by John on one of our stops. The tour was also a good length and we felt we got value for money. Overall, this tour is a must for anyone visiting Monument Valley.
