Following the Footsteps of César Manrique: Four Art Centers

3. Following the Footsteps of César Manrique: Four Art Centers

César, a multidisciplinary artist, painter, sculptor, conservator of monuments and tourist resorts, designer of landscapes and gardens, and recognized ecologist, created from natural volcanic accidents a tendency that impacted the world. He managed to unite Art, Urbanism and Tourism in a single concept, under a philosophy and model of urban intervention based on sustainability and respect for the natural values of the territory, into what is now a world reference. The Island would be different without the Monument to the Peasant, Los Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Cactus Garden or the Cave of the Greens. It would certainly be less attractive and with much less personality. Not visiting these Centers and works of art, being able to interpret them, is like not even having travelled here. This tour offers you the opportunity to discover the North of Lanzarote having a panoramic of Haría, Riscos de Famara and Volcán de la Corona. You will have the privilege to visit the art centers of Cesar Manrique such as Monument to the Peasant, Cactus Garden, Mirador del Río and Fundación César Manrique. Choose if you wish to visit Jameos del Agua or Cueva de los Verdes, two marvelous art centers which are a must in your visit to Lanzarote.

Highly recommend for those who want to see the main excursions to the North of the Island - the tour is half a day approx 8:30-2:00pm. The guide was very knowledgeable with a fantastic sense of humour and gave info in English and Spanish which was appreciated! There is an option to stay on for a tour of the south side if you would like. Only thing that let it down was the lunch stop - the restaurant is in the middle of no where (so no alternative) and the choice is both poor in variety and quality for the €10 fee, knowing what I know now I would have hung on till I got back or brought sandwiches.

The driver and the young lady tour guide were first class!!! Don’t know how the driver managed the narrow bendy roads through the lava field! Get a front seat if you want a thrill ride because the drop just outside your coach is 60+ metres! Enjoyed the caves though very tricky for anyone who isn’t sure-footed or is extremely tall. If you have a good phone camera it will pick out some amazing colours in the caves. There was about 7 or 8 stops at various locations all of which were worthwhile for various reasons. The pick up location is the same as the drop off and was very easy to find.

It was an informative and enjoyable experience. Andrea the guide was very knowledgable and friendly and Sebastian was safe driver even on the windy roads! It was a long day but worth it to see the main sights. I did join in the second half trip to the southern part but it was only €15 extra. The camel trip was different and they were well behaved and well looked after.

It was an amazing tour except everything was a bit to quick. Sometimes the visit was less then 50 minutes so you don’t really get to enjoy the facilities. But, the work of Manrique’s was worth the visit !

The tour guide was amazing, couldn’t fault anything!!!!
