Full description
Discover the great monuments of illustrious figures and the forms of mysterious elegance that dominate the squares and open spaces of Milan. Get a different perspective on the city and observe works from artists that guard the streets of Milan and also see how public art has changed in the last 200 years. See the beautiful statues and monuments in streets and squares such Piazza Duomo, Piazza Cordusio, via Manzoni, and Piazza della Scala. Since the 20th century, the meanings of the monuments have changed, as has the idea of the square as a public place. Politicians, intellectuals, and heroes proud of Italian unification have added monuments that are less and less easy to understand with often obscure references to the complexity of our times. An example of the obscure is Mère Ubu in front of the Palazzo del Senato, the monument to the Carabinieri weapon in Piazza Armando Diaz, the Sole di Pomodoro in Piazza Meda, or the "invisible" sculptures of the Consagra in via Mercant. See also the much-discussed middle finger by artist Maurizio Cattelan in Piazza Affari, a clear sign of a provocation to the status quo.
