Full description
It’s time for a food adventure. Mexico City’s markets are some of the most vibrant places in the city, and this tour opens them up to you, just as locals experience them. Your first stop on your Mexico City tour is a relatively unknown market that boasts a large art collection depicting the political movement from the first half of the 1900s. Your guide will explain the importance of the murals and bridge the gap between the political movement of that period with what is going on in today’s Mexico. After this, travel the city just like the locals do, by riding the public metro. This market boasts an unmatched selection of flowers – you’ll be mesmerized by the variety and by the vendors, who will be all too happy to help you match the perfect bouquet to your eye color. You’ll also find fruits, herbs, meat, fish, pinatas and more, all for sale among the various stalls. You might even find a love potion available amid all the goods. Along the way, you’ll also get to sample some classic Mexican street foods, such as tacos and tamales, along with a coffee or atole – a traditional warm drink made from masa. After buying some fresh vegetables (and learning about local farming practices), head over to a local family business, where you’ll learn how to prepare your own salsa. Together, you’ll wash, cut and grill the ingredients, then smash them in the traditional way, using a molcajete (mortar and pestle). Taste your homemade salsa with a classic huarache.

I had a fabulous tour with Alfonso. We spent several hours touring around the city visiting markets, tasting delicious foods, learning about Mexican history and meeting lovely local people. Every where we went people came up to Alfonso to say hello. Meeting the wonderful family who taught me how to make salsa was definitely a highlight. It felt like Alfonso took me through a secret door and showed me a little piece of real Mexico, I would recommend this tour and guide to anyone who is interested in exploring this wonderful city.

Eduardo was an amazing guide! He let us know each step of the way what to expect and where we were going. He had a wealth of knowledge of each location and was able to answer our questions. The food was delicious! We enjoy trying new food and we definitely had the opportunity to do that. We were stuffed at the end! It was wonderful being able to get away from the tourist locations. We enjoyed using local transportation (bus and subway) and felt very safe everywhere we went. We highly recommend this tour.

This tour was fantastic for those who are adventurous and curious about an authentic cultural experience. If you want to get a local insiders look at the local markets and street food, I highly recommend this. It is well worth the cost of the tour. Our guide, Ernie was great. He gave us so much more than markets and street food. We learned about little the muralist movement and witnessed spectacular murals located within the markets that are rarely scene by tourists. There were many other tidbits of pre-Columbia’s history, politics, colonialism, and Mexican subcultures. The average age or people on the tour was 35. I was the oldest in my early 60s.
