Full description

Escape the hustle and bustle of Mexico City for the day on a full-day tour of the towns of Hidalgo. Following a pick-up from a central meeting point in Mexico City, transfer north to the mining town of Real del Monte (Mineral del Monte). Here, you will have approximately 4 hours to explore the streets at leisure. Sample some of the local street food, such as pulque bread, tamales and other examples of Hidalgo cuisine. Go to the English cemetery, where all the graves are oriented towards England. Enjoy some free time to shop and find some lunch. Then, continue to the Basaltic Prisms of Huasca de Ocampo. Admire the 30-meter tall geometric basalt columns that decorate the walls of the impressive Santa Maria Regla Canyon, where 4 waterfalls feed the San Antonio Regla dam. See the beautiful 18th-century Hacienda San Miguel Regla, former residence of the mining magnate and philanthropist Pedro Romero de Terreros. See why Huasca de Ocampo is named “Magical Town” (Pueblo Mágico) for its preserved architecture and natural surroundings. Discover arches that were once part of the courts, and ovens where the silver was extracted on a 2-hour tour of the hacienda, before returning to Mexico City.

I had booked the excursion because it was supposed to be picked up from the hotel - and I didn't really want to look for any meeting places. One day before the start I received a message that there would be no pick-up from the hotel but pick-up at a meeting point in town. The tour started relatively late, but the places, the English cemetery, the Prisma basaltikos beautiful and the historical part of the hotel Santa Maria regla, was very informative.

informational, great guide and extremely enriching

our guide, Alma, is a very capable bilingual lady who pays attention to everyone in the group. She is very well-versed in her knowledge of all the places we go to and gives everyone substantial free time to roam on our own while balancing it well with the time taken to explain and teach us about the places we visit. :)

Enjoyable trip with good guide

Went on this tour in Feb 2017. An Amigo Tours bus brought us from Zona Rosa to Centro Historico, where we boarded the actual tour bus. We had to spent 20 min at Centro Historico, waiting for other connecting buses to arrive. First we visited the English cemetery: the local guide there spoke only Spanish, but our bus guide acted as an translator. Next we drove to the Real del Monte main square, where we explored the local church, shops and restaurants. Our next stop was Prismas Basalticos: the waterfalls there are a little crowded in the afternoon, but worth a visit nonetheless. Afterwards, we went on a guided tour of the San Miguel Regla Hacienda, a historic estate, a part of which has now been converted into a hotel. The last stop was the Huasca de Ocampo market, which has many nice shops and restaurants. Our return to Mexico City was delayed by a road closure, but the considerate guide dropped us very close to our hotels, instead of leaving us at the pick-up point.
