Kilkenny: Self Guided Tour of Medieval Mile Museum

1. Kilkenny: Self Guided Tour of Medieval Mile Museum

Discover the wonders of the medieval era at Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile Museum. At the start of your visit, pick up your audio guide, available in 6 different languages as well as a child friendly option, then set out on your journey back in time. The museum is Ireland’s finest example of a medieval church and has been lovingly restored in recent years. As you explore the museum, admire the array of ancient artifacts that have been hidden for centuries and are now on display in a world-class exhibition. From your audio guide, learn about and marvel at the treasure trove of objects on display that encompass the work and lives of Ireland and its people throughout the centuries. The museum also contains some of Ireland’s best examples of medieval sculpture and the country’s largest collection of Renaissance tombs which date back to the year 1200. Here you can see the burial site of the rich and poor, and in fact many of Kilkenny’s past generations are still at rest here in the tombs.

The Kilkenny Castle tour can be completed within an hour. I recommend using the audio guides for each room. This castle is unique in that it has been continually updated over the centuries. The victorian decor on the main floor is stunning. The vast expanse of lawn is beautiful! We were very delighted with our visit to Kilkenny Castle.

This was my third visit to the Medieval Mile Museum. It’s a unique place, where you can learn how a specific historical society lived and died. Medieval Kilkenny was a special place and this museum teaches us of the lives of many, rich and poor who lived there.

Thoroughly enjoyed this museum. We enjoyed seeing the process of the archaeology that was done to uncover much of the contents of the museum.

A very interesting experience. totally recommended
