Full description

Pass thorugh stunning valleys and the Atlas Mountains on this 2-day trip from Marrakech. Travel through the Draa valley to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Stay overnight in a desert camp in Zagora, ride a camel in the Sarhara, and enjoy a delicious dinner and breakfast.

Day 1:

Depart early in the morning from Marrakech. Be stunned by the valleys and hills as you travel 7400 feet up in your air-conditioned vehicle. Arrive at the ksar (fortified city) of Ait Ben Haddou, which is located along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech.

Capture pictures of the city of Ait Ben Haddou which has served as the backdrop for films such as “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Time Bandits”, “Kundun”, “The Mummy”, and many more. See why it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. Stop to purchase lunch at a local restaurant. Drive to Ouarzazate which home to film studios and famous sandstone buildings and desert scenery. Cruise through the inspiring Anti Atlas Mountains (Tizi N Tnifift), as well as lush valleys of Agdz and the Draa valley.

Arrive in Zagora and ride a well-trained camel through the desert as the sun sets over the sand. Stop at your campsite and tuck into a hearty dinner before sleeping like a local in an authentic Berber tent.

Day 2: Wake up with the sunrise and enjoy a view of the dunes as you ride your camel back to Zagora. Travel back to Ouarzazate by car, stopping to purchase lunch in Taouirt Kabah. After lunch, return to Marrakech, where the tour concludes.

The journey became much more enjoyable, because we stopped at several places. The return was the worst, 6 hours by car, practically without seeing anything. Camels, at night in the desert so that they do not escape, are tied with a rope on a bent leg, so that they cannot escape. That was what made me feel more sorry for having done the excursion, since on top of that they were lifted up and made to move limping about 50 meters with their bent legs tied up.

The car journey was a bit painful since we had to sit in a small minivan (8 seater) for 8-10 hours on both days. I would highly recommend car sickness pills since the roads are not always smooth and there are many twists and turns. The food on the trip was pretty good and there are plenty of bathroom breaks during the car ride. Our driver was quiet, and at each stop he told us where we were and how much it would cost to hire a guide for that place. After we got to Zagora, the camel ride was fun, and Omar (the person guiding the camels) made sure we were all doing alright during the camel ride. The camp was very nicely set up and I was suprised how well kept it was (e.g. there were carpets in the tents so there wasn't sand everywhere plus the toilets were clean). Night in the Sahara is definitely cold, so bring warm clothes and I would suggest people who go to mentally prepare to wake up at 07:30-08:00am in pitch black in a really cold tent. I bought warm bags with me.

Super organized and highly recommended experience. Omar was a great and safe driver who provided us with plenty of information about the country and places. The desert camp was very nice, the atmosphere was unique and the Berbers were super friendly and gave a great insight into their life and culture. Even if the drive is very long, we would absolutely recommend this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
