10. From Budapest: Szentendre Bike Hire with Boat & Train Return
Take a bicycle in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest and ride through the City Center to the Danube. Bicycle ways and small downtown roads are awaiting you. You pass the main sights of Budapest like St. Stephen's Basilica, the Financial District, and Liberty Square before reaching the Parliament. Enjoy the stunning view of the river bank. A safe bicycle way will lead you on Margaret Bridge to Margarete Island, the green lunge of Budapest. The island is closed for private car traffic and offers plenty of attractions.
Cross the Island to the north and at Arpad Bridge, you can pass under the bridge to a bicycle way leading you to Buda and directly into Oldbuda. Expect a short ride on cobblestones in an amazing relaxed atmosphere. You will follow the signage of the Danube Bicycle Trail, Eurovelo 6 to Roman Beach. Famous recreational area for summer evenings & weekends for the locals. Restaurants and bars at the Danube. Depending on the water level beaches!
Follow through a magic forest and pass Lupa-Lake, an artificial lake with crystal clear water. The entrance is from the south-western side. Swimming, waterskiing, diving, etc. An entrance fee is required.
Continue on a newly built bicycle way to Szentendre, an idyllic city at the Danube Bank. Here you will also find beaches, bars, and restaurants. Park the bicycle at the river and take a walk in the pedestrian areas.
On Weekends (Fri-Sat-Sun) at 17:00 hrs (5 p.m.) a boat leaves back to Downtown Budapest. Approximately 1-hour ride. Be prepared to arrive well in advance, in order to load the bicycles and get you a nice seat. The boat is only available on weekends and can be canceled because of water levels in the Danube. Alternatively, there is an excellent regional train connection to Budapest, Margaret Bridge, and Batthyany Square. The train takes bicycles as well.
