The 5 Most Iconic Buildings in the Manhattan Skyline

New York City invented the skyscraper, and its skyline against the Atlantic is breathtaking by both day and night. Spot these historic and modern wonders from a boat, helicopter, bridge, or the top of one of the gigantic iron buildings themselves.

Renowned for its elaborate Art Deco style, it is regarded as one of the architecturally finest buildings in the world. Get the best view at the top of the Empire State Building.

Empire State Building

Our insider tips

The Cost of the City

The skyline is always going to be free, so spending is totally in your control. The tours are fantastic and prices vary. If saving is more your style, take the ferry to Staten Island, no tickets required, and get the skyline view along with the same historic view early immigrants had arriving at Ellis Island.

Walk a bridge to Brooklyn

New Yorkers will tell you that walking a stretch of the Brooklyn Bridge is a must-do during your visit. Less popular (read: less crowded) is the Williamsburg Bridge, where you can catch the same magnificent view of the skyline -- as well as a postcard view of that famed Brooklyn Bridge.

Good to know

  • When should I visit?
24 hours a day, but the best photography moments are at sunrise and sunset
  • Is it expensive?
    Free!
  • Will I need a guide?
If you want, sure! But it's not necessary.
  • How to get there
Depending on your destination, take the subway or walk like a New Yorker!
  • Additional information
Though not located in a tropical clime per say, New York can get very muggy in the summer. Avoid the sweltering heat by heading out early and taking a long lunch at midday.

What people are saying about Manhattan Skyline

Miss the Lines! Get your tickets at GetYourGuide

On a recent trip to NYC, we wanted to make another trip to Ellis Island. the concierge at our hotel could not get us boat tickets. But I found GETYour Guide by Mistake...bought the tickets, went to Battery Park and found the hostess. Got the tickets, enjoyed the day at our leisure and got a bonus trip to Statue of Liberty! I HIGHLY recommend them. Easy, convenient, NO LINES.

Chris was an excellent guide, highly recommend him and this tour.

Chris was well organised and friendly. He really looked after us as a group and his commentary brought the whole thing alive. He also made us laugh and went to a lot of trouble to help us get good photos in front of the statue of liberty !!

Amazing, spectacular views of Manhattan and beyond from high in thesky

This is a must on any tourist visit to New York. Buying tickets in advance meant we were able to ‘skip the line’ giving us more time for viewing. Sit and listen to the ambassadors talk it’s fun and informative. The view of the 9/11 memorial is fantastic.

Our group really enjoyed this moment. Food & jazz band were both good

Great cruise and brunch. The weather was so nice, we got lucky. Food was excellent and in large quantities. Maybe think about adding some more gluten free dishes, especially for desserts.

It is a MUST do if you are visiting Manhattan.

It is a MUST do if you are visiting Manhattan. It does not matter if you are an architect. The tour is amazing. The information, the skyline, the crew and the service. The best tour I had in Manhattan.
