Full description
Spend time in nature during a 5-hour guided walk in Queimadas Natural Park. Travel from Funchal to the park and follow your mountain guide on a moderate trek through the wild. This walk winds along the walkway of the levada (irrigation channel) of Caldeirão Verde at an elevation of 3,248 feet (990 meters). The levada is an impressive work of art built in the 18th century, beginning in the main stream bed of the Caldeirão Verde brook. Passing through steep cliffs and mountains, it carries the water that runs off the highest mountains of Madeira, which culminates in the irrigation of the farm lands of the parish of Faial.  This levada is used for agricultural purposes, but it is also an important means of reaching the interior of the deep valley of the São Jorge brook on foot. It also offers a spectacular view of the mountainous terrain of the interior of the island. On your route, you will also have the opportunity to walk through tunnels carved by hand out of the rock.

The guide in particular was very upbeat and friendly. When my partner realised she forgot her rain jacket he provided a poncho which was very kind. We had truly miserable weather on the way up but the guide was careful, funny and insightful. He remained upbeat and positive and that makes a real difference

An enjoyable walk but it took 2 half hrs to arrive at the walk/starting point and not enough emphasis on equipment (Torch) which is vital when walking though the dark low tunnels. Disappointed when we thought we had returned to the starting point (8 miles) but then had too walk a further mile and a quarter to catch the buse which had orginally dropped as at the starting point earlier in the day. Then to be taken to a village which we didn't know about when all we wished to do is go back to our hotel and shower/rest. This was an unnessary addition too a very long day. Not 5 hrs more like 9 and half hrs. This needs to be made clearer in the advert.
