As an American, born 1945, I learned about the US war endlessly, to the exclusion of our Allies‘ participation, thanks to popular culture and Yank jingoism. Perhaps without intending it, this museum stands as an important corrective to the record fed to us through the mass media. The abundant period artifacts, many of which we are allowed to handle, present a more accurate account. After all, the UK was in the war up to its eyeballs from the very beginning in September 1939. The visitor here can feel British pride in their achievement in World War II but there is no chest beating. Instead, the understated, chiefly informative displays draw us into the world that existed in the Western Approaches HQ and which occupied this protected subterranean warren. It’s a must for any student of the war.

Because we were alive during the war it gave the full picture of what was going on whereas we only knew some talk of what happened. I lived in London and my wife in Bootle so we saw lots of destruction especially my wife who was bombed out of her house as it was so near the docks.
